Two New, High-Quality, Spanish-Language Channels from Discovery are the First U.S. Spanish-Language Networks to Focus on Women, Children, and Families
“Discovery Kids en Español and Discovery Travel & Living (Viajar y Vivir) will provide Cox’s San Diego-area customers with even more Spanish-language programming that the whole family can enjoy,” said Robert Krimsky, Director of Acquisition Marketing for Cox San Diego. “The addition of these two new channels reflects Cox Communications’ ongoing commitment to both family-friendly and diverse programming that reflects the communities we serve.”
To create these new networks for U.S. Spanish-speaking families, Discovery draws on its success in 23 Spanish-speaking countries worldwide and the proven appeal of Discovery en Español, which is already available nationwide. Discovery’s effort to provide greater programming diversity for the Hispanic population is validated by a recent study conducted by LatinoEyes, a division of C&R Research, among bilingual and Spanish-dominant Latinos who watch Spanish-language television. A large majority of respondents said they want to see higher-quality programming dealing with travel, history and culture, as well as more educational shows for children. They also want the programming to be culturally relevant and to portray Latinos more accurately. Specifically:
-- 91% of respondents rated “Have more educational programs for children to learn about Hispanic culture and language” as a “High Importance” program attribute.
-- 86% rated “Have more educational programs for adults to learn about Hispanic culture and language” as being of “High Importance.”
-- 85% gave a “High Importance” rating to “Have more family-friendly Spanish television shows.”
-- 85% listed “Portray women in a better light” as a “High Importance” item.
Discovery Kids en Español is the first U.S. Spanish-language network that appeals to everyone in the household, targeting preschoolers, “tweens” and families in programming blocks spread throughout the day. The program selection is designed to stimulate and inspire kids’ thirst for knowledge, while challenging them to explore their world. Educational interstitials will air throughout the day targeting preschoolers and tweens, teaching preschoolers about A-B-Cs and 1-2-3s, and tweens about geography and math. The evening includes informative and heartwarming programs about animals and nature for the entire family to enjoy. It is the channel parents trust and kids will love.
Following the tradition of Discovery’s international travel and lifestyle programming comes Discovery Travel & Living (Viajar y Vivir), a getaway for adults, especially women, who want to experience the best the world has to offer—in their native language. The network provides an eclectic mix of programming on travel, well-being, food, design and décor, and encourages Hispanic viewers to live life well and make the most of their free time. Destination-based interstitials exploring popular Latin American countries including Argentina, Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala and more, air throughout the day, further enhancing the network’s cultural relevance and connection with the U.S.-based Hispanic audience.
Discovery Travel & Living (Viajar y Vivir) and Discovery Kids en Español significantly expand Discovery’s existing Spanish-language programming offering, which already includes Discovery en Español. Since 1998, Discovery en Español has brought Spanish-speaking viewers the very best programs from the family of Discovery Networks. San Diego viewers can find out how they can get these two new channels as part of Paquete Latino on Cox Digital Cable by calling 1-877-PIDELOS (1-877-743-3567).
