GOLDEN, CO--(HISPANIC PR WIRE)--September 30, 2002--Coors Light, the official sponsor of the 2002 Maná Revolución de Amor U.S. fall concert tour, and Maná have joined forces to support Hispanic college students across the U.S. and Puerto Rico through the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Coors Light Academic Success in Education (CLASE) Scholarship Fund. For every Maná concert ticket sold, Maná will donate $.50, which Coors Light will match with an additional $.50, for a combined maximum contribution of $200,000.
"Coors Light is excited to sponsor this highly-awaited Maná concert tour and to work with such a respected and socially-conscious musical group to help benefit Hispanic college students," said Paul Mendieta, Ethnic Marketing Director, Coors Brewing Company. "Our partnership with HACU and Maná provides fans an exciting entertainment experience, while participating in a worthy cause by giving back to the community. It's a win-win situation for everyone," added Mendieta.
Coors Brewing Company recognizes the importance of establishing programs to provide academic resources for Hispanic college students. As part of its Maná concert tour sponsorship, Coors Light enhanced its existing CLASE Scholarship Fund to help Hispanics reach their full academic potential. Through the CLASE Scholarship fund, students at more than 300 HACU-member colleges and universities in the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico, will be eligible to apply for $1,000 CLASE Scholarships.
Coors Light developed this program in an effort to educate students and their parents about valuable opportunities available for furthering their education. Data shows that only 22.4% of Hispanic high school graduates ages 18-21 were enrolled in college in 2000 versus the rate of 44.4% for whites (Statistical Abstract of the United States 2001, US Bureau of the Census.) In addition, Hispanics are dramatically less likely to obtain a bachelor's degree, as compared to their white counterparts.
"HACU greatly depends on corporate, federal, and private contributions to respond to the needs of our member institutions and Hispanic students," said Antonio R. Flores, Ph.D., HACU president and CEO. "It is thanks to partnerships with responsible brands, such as Coors Light, that we can continue to provide scholarships, educational and career development programs for Hispanics," added Flores.
The CLASE Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate college and university students of all majors. Applicants must be full-time students at a HACU-member college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Mexico, have achieved excellence in academic and extracurricular activities, and demonstrate financial need. Students in the U.S. and Puerto Rico may use the scholarship to study at their home institution or to study abroad at a HACU-member institution in Mexico. Students in Mexico can use the scholarship to study at a U.S. HACU-member institution. Students may request an application for the CLASE Scholarship on HACU's web site - http://www.hacu.net - beginning in October, 2002. Students can also request an application by contacting HACU at (210) 692-3805 or members@hacu.net.
The 2002 Maná Revolución de Amor U.S. fall concert tour kicks-off in Denver on September 29. Other cities on the tour include: Las Vegas, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Jose, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, New York, Boston and Chicago.
"We believe that anyone who wishes to expand his or her potential and possibilities should not be deterred because of lack of money or resources. We are proud to be able to help Hispanic students realize their dreams," said Fher, lead singer of Maná.
Coors Light outreach to the U.S. Hispanic community is part of an ongoing effort that includes culturally relevant advertising, promotional and grassroots campaigns.
