Tampa, FL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–May 23, 2006–The Florida chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has entered into an agreement with Access Card Systems, Inc. to offer its members the ACCESS DineroYa(TM) Prepaid MasterCard(R) and the ACCESS DineroYa(TM) Maestro(R) Card issued by BankFirst, to serve its members who do not have a credit or debit card. This innovative solution meets the needs of the unbanked and underbanked by providing the convenience, security and prestige of a prepaid MasterCard card for shopping, dining and traveling without credit reviews, bank accounts and employment checks.
LULAC of Florida State Director Anita de Palma, along with national LULAC President Hector Flores presented the new card program to members at the LULAC state convention held here at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa in Safety Harbor, FL.
The innovative cards serve a large population of young adults, recent immigrants and other consumers who do not have bank accounts, cannot qualify or do not want credit cards. According to a 2005 research report by the Chicago-based Center for Financial Services Innovation, 22 million households in the United States do not have a checking or savings account. These consumers have had few alternatives when it comes to making everyday purchases.
“We have been actively searching for a product that would help Latinos with their basic financial needs, while creating an important fund raising source for our chapter,” said De Palma. LULAC members will start receiving additional information about obtaining the ACCESS DineroYa Prepaid MasterCard for them or their employees who may be interested in the features and benefits associated with a dual card system.
The ACCESS DineroYa two card system provides users with a tremendous amount of financial freedom. Purchases may be made with the ACCESS DineroYa Prepaid MasterCard wherever MasterCard debit cards are accepted, and with the ACCESS DineroYa Maestro Card wherever Maestro cards are accepted, whether from a local supermarket or an online store. Cardholders keep the prepaid MasterCard card and send the other card to friends or family here in the U.S. or outside the country.
They then deposit funds as they would with any other transaction, and allow the other person to obtain those funds from over one million ATMs worldwide. Cardholders will be able to load their card through 5,800 Bank of America locations in the United States or 43,000 participating Green Dot(R) Financial Network retailers such as CVS Pharmacy and Radio Shack nationwide.
Money is immediately accessible on both cards, wherever the cardholders are, in their respective local currencies, without the traditional cost of wiring. For example, if a person in Florida loads $200 onto a card, a relative in Mexico can immediately access those funds, and the cost of the transaction would only be $2. In addition, a portion of the proceeds generated from card usage will be donated to LULAC’s scholarship program in order to benefit the academic dreams of outstanding students. “It’s pretty simple: our members save money, receive the benefits of a prepaid MasterCard card and LULAC uses the proceeds to award scholarships to area students,” De Palma said.
“We offer a safe, low-cost financial service that’s convenient and accessible to everyone,” said Larry Hunt, President of Access Card Systems (ACS), which has partnered with LULAC to distribute the new ACCESS DineroYa Prepaid MasterCard and ACCESS DineroYa Maestro Card to LULAC members in Florida.
Working closely with the hundreds of employers that are members of LULAC in Florida, ACS will help users of the ACCESS DineroYa Prepaid MasterCard and ACCESS DineroYa Maestro Card to experience the convenience of direct deposit, eliminating the hassle of paper checks. Direct deposit allows users to avoid the costs and effort associated with cashing their old paychecks, with safe electronic deposits and no additional costs involved. The program also assists employers with reducing the costs associated with issuing paper pay checks to participating employees.
