LOS ANGELES, Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Millions of parents will be hitting the stores in the next few weeks to stock up on school supplies for their children. But for families struggling just to put food on the table, back-to-school items are luxuries they simply can’t afford. The result? Countless kids are not only ill-prepared for the year ahead, but are stigmatized in the classroom.
Carlos Marquez host of the Adelante Con Carlos Radio Show, is partnering with the Los Angeles-based San Miguel Foundation to ensure hundreds of kids get the supplies they need through an initiative called La Mochila Azul (The Blue Backpack). “Having grown up poor, I know what it’s like to come home with a list of school supplies that your parents can’t afford,” says Carlos Marquez. “It’s not fun.”
Marquez says La Mochila Azul wouldn’t be possible without the support of the San Miguel Foundation, “San Miguel Foundation is invaluable because it provides needed medical assistance now while also setting people up for success in the future through preventive services,” he praises.
Marquez expects to give away approximately 1,000 backpacks filled with essentials such as crayons, pencils, binders and markers to elementary students who are eager to achieve academically but who don’t have the essential supplies to do so. Distribution will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m., September 4, at San Miguel Clinic (122 E. Washington Blvd. in Los Angeles) on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be present to claim their backpacks. Parents may reserve a backpack in advance by calling (888) 933-2626.
“School supplies may seem like a small thing,” Marquez says, “but it can make a real difference. Students will be able to focus on learning, rather than on the tools they don’t have.”
