ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Alliance for Digital Equality kicks off their celebration of Super Bowl XLIII with the “Gridiron Toast To Excellence Awards” at the Ocean Prime in Orlando, Florida. Leaders from the National Football League, education, civic engagement, and business will be honored including: Democratic Leadership Council Chairman Harold Ford, Jr., President Emeritus of Florida A&M University Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, Sr., McDonald’s Chief Global Diversity Officer Pat Harris, Tarra Enterprises CEO Tarra L. Pressey, and Executive Vice-President of NFL Labor Relations Harold Henderson.

“This signature pre-Super Bowl event came about as a way to honor great leaders making significant inroads in the nation’s underserved communities,” said Alliance Chairman Julius H. Hollis. “At this historic time in our nation’s history, we need to recognize the great work people are doing in all sectors of our country.”

The Alliance launched the Miami, Florida Digital Empowerment Council (DEC) in early 2008 to explore the impact of affordable broadband deployment in the South Florida community. The Miami DEC is part of a nationwide ADE initiative that advocates for increased broadband access — particularly in urban and underserved communities. The Alliance has other Councils in Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; Charleston, South Carolina; Houston, Texas and Detroit, Michigan.

“When The Alliance was first getting off the ground a couple years ago, we wanted to ensure our grassroots efforts were supplemented by leaders in communities across the country,” Alliance Chairman Hollis said. “The purpose of this event is to honor those individuals and bring attention to the need for more broadband technologies across the nation.”

Among this year’s honorees is Harold Ford Jr., who served Tennessee in the United States Congress for ten years. In addition to now serving as Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, Ford is also a visiting Public Policy Professor at Vanderbilt University and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
