CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 6, 2004–The eyes of Texas and others will be upon Corpus Christi on Feb. 23-25, 2004, as industry giants will gather during the second bi-annual conference, AmericasUnidas hosted by the Port of Corpus Christi. Leaders in the fields of energy, monetary policy, agriculture and ocean research will participate to discuss opportunities amongst the United States, Mexico, Central and South America.
Dr. Sylvia Earle, the 2004 honorary chair of AmericasUnidas and chair for the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University — Corpus Christi, will open the conference on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Dr. Earle, a National Geographic Explorer-in-residence, former chief-scientist for the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and marine biologist, has spent more than 6,000 hours underwater and has led more than 50 expeditions.
Texas’ top agriculture leader, Susan Combs, will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Combs has served as commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture since 1999. Combs has been invited to lecture at Harvard Business School on the U.S.-Mexico water situation. In 2003, she was named co-chair of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Tri-National Accord, U.S.-Mexico working group.
Robert D. McTeer, president and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas, Texas, will speak on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 24. McTeer has been described as the leader of “the free enterprise Fed.” Under his leadership, the Dallas Federal Reserve has become the Federal Reserve System’s gateway to Mexico and Latin America.
Governor Bill Richardson, State of New Mexico, will speak at the closing luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Governor Bill Richardson was elected Governor in 2002 by the largest margin of any candidate since 1964. Governor Richardson served in 1997 as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. He was U.S. Secretary of Energy from 1998-2000. Governor Richardson has been nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Energy giants, President and CEO of Valero Energy Corporation Bill Greehey and President CITGO International Latin America and Executive Vice President CITGO Petroleum Antonio Rivero will each lead panel discussions on issues impacting energy. President and CEO of CITGO Petroleum Corporation Luis Marin will speak on Feb. 23.
This two-day conference will also address a variety of issues from energy to trade with Cuba to containerized trade to economic development success stories to exploring the environmental health and sustainability of the Gulf of Mexico.
