Camarillo, CA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–June 29, 2004–Blue Cross of California (Blue Cross) today announced that it has launched a mobile outreach program offering application assistance for children into California’s Healthy Families Program, the state’s low-cost health program for children. Blue Cross is rolling out two new custom vans staffed with outreach personnel to travel throughout the state offering education and onsite application assistance for California’s Healthy Families or Medi-Cal Programs.

“Access to health care and health coverage for children is one of our top priorities,” said John Monahan, senior vice president, Blue Cross of California state sponsored programs. “The state’s current financial crisis and cut backs have created outreach needs for this important health program. All of us involved in the health care system must step up our efforts to ensure that families and children have an opportunity to apply for health coverage.”

Specially designed for Blue Cross of California, these new vans have been outfitted as traveling information centers. Everything needed to educate a family on the Healthy Families Program along with the ability to complete and submit the program application is on board the van. Blue Cross staff will accompany the van on its travels in order to assist families with the Healthy Families Program application.

Blue Cross will be sending its outreach van to local events and community-based organizations throughout California to encourage onsite application.

“This is going to be a true grassroots effort. We’re not going to wait for uninsured children and their families to seek out information about Healthy Families – we’re going to bring it to them. Whether they’re at a community event, a local community clinic, a shopping center or a health fair, we’re going to be there giving them the chance to apply for the Healthy Families Program,” said Monahan.

Blue Cross’ outreach vans will begin stopping at local events throughout the state. In addition to local events and high traffic areas, the vans will also stop at Blue Cross’ 10 Community Resource Centers (CRCs) across the state. Blue Cross’ CRCs are local centers providing information and education on state sponsored health coverage programs (including Healthy Families and Medi-Cal) as well as private insurance for individuals, families and small businesses.
