FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec. 3, 2003–Dr. Larry Anthony Calderon, a 28-year veteran of the California community college system, has accepted the position of president at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Calderon succeeds Dr. Willis Holcombe who retires at the end of January after 17 years of service to the college. The Broward Community College District Board of Trustees asked Calderon to join the college on November 17, and confirmed him as the new president at the monthly trustees meeting on November 26.
Calderon comes to BCC from Ventura College in Ventura, California where he is serving in his ninth year as president. In that post, Calderon provided leadership and overall direction, supervision, coordination and evaluation of the college. Calderon also serves the three-college Ventura County Community College District as vice chancellor for economic development.
Some accomplishments include creating the Ventura College Institute for Community and Professional Development, developing partnerships with private and public entities in Ventura County, expanding the Ventura College East Campus, and overseeing an institutional strategic planning process.
Before joining Ventura College, Calderon served as vice president of instruction at Oxnard College in California for three years. At Oxnard, Calderon oversaw the college’s instructional programs and services. He also served for six years as vice president of administrative services at Oxnard.
Calderon previously served as assistant dean of student services at Los Angeles City College for six years, and coordinator of student financial services at Ventura College for four years.
Dr. Calderon began his higher education at Ventura College, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He earned his masters and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Southern California.
Dr. Calderon and his wife Lila have been married for 28 years. They have two children – a daughter who is a graduate of San Diego State, and a son who is a student at Ventura College.
