New York, NY–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–October 7, 2005–CATALINA magazine, with the National Association of Latina Leaders (NALL), is hosting the 4th annual “Groundbreaking Latinas” Hispanic Heritage Month event and award show, on Tuesday, October 11, at New York’s landmark Hudson Theater, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The evening of celebrating, which includes an award ceremony and a live private performance by 17-year-old singer JD Natasha, brings together Latina leaders, VIP guests, and celebrities.

Since its inception in 2001, the invite-only event celebrates Hispanic women for their groundbreaking work each year. “We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month the best way we know how: by honoring inspirational women who have played a significant role in shaping our community in 2005,” CATALINA’s founder, Cathy Areu, says.

The 2005 “Groundbreaking Latina” award recipients, as nominated by CATALINA readers, and chosen by the NALL advisory board, are:

— CNN’s Soledad O’Brien will be recognized as CATALINA’s 2005 “Groundbreaking Latina” for her extraordinary work as one of the only English-language Latina news anchors in the country. In 2005, Soledad was one of the only female TV journalists covering the Gulf Coast devastation.

— Singer JD Natasha will be honored for receiving the most Latin Grammy nominations of any U.S. Latina in 2005, with a CATALINA “Groundbreaking Latina in Music” award.

— Filmmaker Mercedes Jimenez-Ramirez will receive the special “Groundbreaking Latina in Community Leadership” award, sponsored by Volvo Cars of North America, for her award-winning film, Palomos, featuring street children in Latin America. In 2005, new laws were passed in the Dominican Republic helping the victims depicted in her film.

— Sesame Street’s Sonia Manzano will be honored with CATALINA’s first annual “Lifetime Groundbreaking Latina” award for her pioneering work over the past 3 decades. (As a surprise, Sonia’s TV husband, “Luis” (Emilio Delgado), will present the groundbreaker with her award.)

The premiere sponsor for this year’s event is Volvo Cars of North America. Event sponsors also include Deloitte, ExxonMobil, Lockheed Martin, Northwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, Eden Foods, and Garnier. Each attendee will receieve gift bags, on behalf of the sponsors, and each award receipient will receive an award and a handmade limited edition Gevril timepiece.
