BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J.,–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–April 1, 2003–Spring is in the air-and so are tree pollens, grass pollens and other allergens that can antagonize your senses and keep you from fully enjoying springtime activities. If you are one of the estimated 35 million seasonal allergy sufferers in America, you know that sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; a runny, stuffy nose; and other allergy symptoms-or the drowsiness or “medicine haze” from some allergy medications-can keep you from feeling clear-headed. Now, for the first time ever during the spring allergy season, allergy sufferers have a non-drowsy*, over-the-counter (OTC) option for prescription-strength allergy relief: CLARITIN®, the most prescribed nonsedating antihistamine.**
As part of its On the Road to Clarity(TM) educational campaign, CLARITIN® Allergy Products, the “Official Sponsor of Spring,” is helping sufferers learn how non-drowsy allergy relief can contribute to clarity for mind, body and spirit-a positive state where allergy sufferers can do what they need and want to do without fear of drowsiness-with an informational Clarity Zone(TM) traveling to major cities nationwide through June.
Ty Pennington, carpenter from the home design cable television show Trading Spaces, suffers from allergies and is the campaign’s official spokesperson. “Since I do most of my work outdoors, I don’t have time to slow down because of my allergies. And as a carpenter, I’m always working with power tools, so I need to be focused and clear-headed,” says Pennington. “Taking CLARITIN helps me achieve clarity in my daily life. I can get relief from my allergy symptoms, without the drowsiness or medicine haze that I get from some other allergy medications, so that I can work and do the things that I really enjoy, like soccer and hiking.”
Just in time for spring allergy season, the Clarity Zone will stop in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, New York and Baltimore/ Washington, DC. Through interactive demonstrations, the tour will show allergy sufferers how to enjoy outdoor activities this spring without being stopped by their allergy symptoms. The Clarity Zone also will show consumers how non-drowsy allergy relief contributes to clarity for mind, body and spirit.
The Clarity Zone will be visiting major events for three to four days in each city. Clarity Zone visitors will be able to register to win an Aprilia Scarabeo 50 Ditech motor scooter at the events in each city in the spirit of enjoying greater springtime freedom as they venture on the road to clarity. Allergy sufferers can log on to http://www.claritin.com to find sweepstakes rules, Clarity Zone locations, and schedules.
Antihistamines alleviate the physical discomfort of allergy symptoms by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical produced by the body in reaction to allergens. But many over-the-counter antihistamines have sedating side effects that may negatively affect the daily lives of allergy sufferers, including the ability to work productively and drive safely.
“Spring is a peak allergy season, and many of my patients suffer from sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; stuffy nose; and other associated symptoms, which may have a negative impact on spring training and other activities during this time of the year,” said Daniel Carr, MD, head physician for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games. “Allergy sufferers should understand the importance of treating their symptoms and know the benefits of using nonsedating antihistamines. When taken at the recommended dose, CLARITIN products control allergy symptoms without causing drowsiness, giving sufferers freedom to go about their normal daily activities without being stopped by fatigue.”
Schering Laboratories received FDA approval on November 27, 2002 for the over-the-counter sale of all five formulations of the CLARITIN brand, each at its original prescription strength: CLARITIN® Tablets, a once-daily formulation; CLARITIN® RediTabs® Tablets, a novel once-daily formulation in an orally disintegrating tablet; CLARITIN-D® 24 Hour Extended Release Tablets, a once-daily formulation with a decongestant; CLARITIN-D® 12 Hour Extended Release Tablets, a twice-daily formulation with a decongestant; and CLARITIN® Syrup, a liquid formulation with directions for use in children 2 years of age and older.
The approval of CLARITIN as a non-drowsy OTC antihistamine builds upon Schering-Plough Corporation’s more than 50-year heritage as a leader in the discovery, development and marketing of allergy medications. Through a wide variety of programs, the company will seek to ensure that consumers with chronic respiratory allergies, complicated by associated conditions such as asthma, remain in close communication with their physician or health care provider.
