San Diego, CA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–July 5, 2006–CompassLearning, the leading provider of K-12 education software that empowers educators to teach and students to learn more effectively, announced today the availability of Odyssey(R) ThinkScience en Espanol, a standards-aligned science curriculum for K-6 students whose native language is Spanish that prepares them for high-stakes testing in science.

Designed to enrich a classroom’s general science curriculum, Odyssey(R) ThinkScience en Espanol provides science instruction in Spanish to help English Language Learners (ELL) improve their annual progress and academic language acquisition, meeting Title I, Title III and IDEA accountability requirements. In addition, it may be used simultaneously with the new Odyssey(R) ThinkScience in English curriculum, thereby meeting the needs of bilingual instruction settings and enabling English- and Spanish-speaking students to learn the same lessons together, side-by-side, in their native languages.

The Odyssey(R) ThinkScience en Espanol curriculum also:

— Promotes science concepts and vocabulary acquisition in Spanish for students mastering the English language as they learn science skills

— Correlates to all state science standards and covers the Benchmarks for Science Literacy

— Provides features and tools, such as closed caption functionality, an audio and visual glossary of scientific terms and on-screen text support in English or Spanish, to optimize student engagement

— Combines illustration, animation, real pictures, audio, text, video and embedded simulations in multimedia online lessons and activities

— Uses age-appropriate characters to model the contents and tutor students through tailored stories

— Offers explicit direct instruction and exploratory instructional design models

— Integrates reading and math skills into the science instruction via online and offline activities

— Runs on the Odyssey(R) platform

“Odyssey(R) ThinkScience and Odyssey(R) ThinkScience en Espanol are the only science education software products on the market that empower teachers to provide true, ‘parallel-learning’ opportunities to English- and Spanish-speaking K-6 students,” said Ann Henson, Vice President, Curriculum and Instruction, CompassLearning. Parallel learning is defined as the presentation of the same concepts, skills and content in both English and Spanish.

According to Henson, “These products are significant both educationally and socially and fill an important market need. They enable millions of ELL students to learn side-by-side with other students using the same concepts, skills and content in their native language.”

CompassLearning also offers this unique parallel-learning opportunity to English- and Spanish-speaking K-4 students via its Odyssey(R) Math and Odyssey(R) Matematicas products.
