Flower Mound, TX–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–March 13, 2006–Delta Dental Insurance Company announced today its selection as the sole insurer of the dental program under the Texas Children’s Health Program (CHIP), which will bring dental coverage to more than 311,000 children of low-income Texas families.

CHIP is a state- and federal-funded program designed to help children whose families are above the income threshold for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance. The dental portion of the Texas CHIP, which is being reinstated after three years, takes effect April 1 and will provide preventive and therapeutic benefits to children under 19 who are enrolled in the health insurance program. Enrolled children will each receive free preventive care including x-rays, cleanings and sealants up to a total of $175 per 12-month coverage period. Therapeutic care such as fillings, crowns, root canals and extractions will be covered up to a maximum of $200 to $400 per 12-month period, depending on patient eligibility.

The three-year contract has an estimated value of about $90 million — including the cost of dental services paid to participating dentists — with an option to be extended up to three additional years. The contract will be administered by the State Government and Community Partnership Programs division of Delta Dental of California.

Delta Dental will recruit among its current contracting dentists in the state to provide care to Texas CHIP enrollees, as well as solicit participation from other licensed dentists in order to provide maximum access to care for eligible enrollees. To date, more than 1,100 Texas dentists have joined the program.

“Naturally, we are pleased that Texas legislators have recognized the importance of dental health by committing their financial resources to this very important program,” said Marilynn Belek, DMD, Delta Dental’s executive vice president and chief dental officer. “This builds upon our previous support of community-based dental programs in Texas and enables us to reach a much larger segment of an underserved population — namely, children. We’re pleased to work in partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the Texas Dental Association and the state’s community of committed dental professionals to bring treatment and preventive services to so many children of families who are unable to afford private insurance.”
