MIAMI, June 17 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Discovery en Espanol, the leading provider of high-quality, nonfiction Spanish-language programming, presents the dramatic story of NASA’s pioneering, awe-inspiring missions, in commemoration of the first 50 years of space exploration in the landmark special series WHEN WE LEFT EARTH: THE NASA MISSIONS. The special series kicks off on Sunday, June 29 at 9:00 PM (ET/PT) with two consecutive episodes each night, and runs every Sunday through July 13.

As a key part of the series, for the first time, priceless original mission footage was transferred from NASA’s own film vaults to high definition (HD), making these national treasures available at unprecedented resolution for viewers now and for future generations of scholars and filmmakers.

In addition to the magnificent visual voyage through space and history, and as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, Discovery en Espanol will also showcase a number of shorts featuring influential Hispanics who have made or are making important contributions to space exploration entitled “NASA en Espanol”.

“From astronauts and engineers to scientists, Hispanics have and continue to make a mark on the space program. Discovery en Espanol’s vignettes are meant to celebrate these remarkable individuals whose daily work plays a role on one of mankind’s most ambitious enterprises,” said Luis Silberwasser, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Discovery Networks U.S. Hispanic Group.

Beyond the informative shorts celebrating Hispanics in NASA, Discovery en Espanol will also feature expert commentary during each episode by Dr. Franklin Chang Diaz, the first Hispanic to go into space. Dr. Chang Diaz is a veteran of seven space shuttle missions, making him the record holder for most spaceflights by an astronaut (a record he shares with Jerry L. Ross).

From the early quest of the Mercury program to put a man in space, to the historic moon landings, through the first untethered space walk by Bruce McCandless, and the tragic accidents on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003, WHEN WE LEFT EARTH is the incredible story of humankind’s greatest adventure, as it happened, recounted by those who experienced it firsthand.

The groundbreaking series features John Glenn (the first American to orbit Earth) and Apollo Astronaut Neil Armstrong (the first human to walk on the moon) talking on camera about their history making careers. In addition over 30 distinguished astronauts from Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Shuttle missions were interviewed, including Scott Carpenter, Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan, Jim Lovell, Jim McDivitt, John Young and Eileen Collins.

The vivid series includes vintage rushes and the entire key onboards filmed by the astronauts themselves. The sequences are captured by cameras onboard the spaceships, enabling the series to tell the stories in a depth never before seen.

Each episode in the series clearly captures the evolution of the space program, showcasing the initial apprehensions faced by pioneer astronauts, and the great courage, innovation and groundbreaking advances that got us to where we are today. The series concludes with a look at the future of space exploration, from the Moon to Mars and beyond.

WHEN WE LEFT EARTH was produced for Discovery Channel by Dangerous Films. Richard Dale is executive producer for Dangerous Films. Bill Howard is the executive producer for Discovery Channel.
