‘El Reto Final Nissan’ Wins ‘Best Variety or Reality Show’ Honors at 21st Annual Imagen Awards

Groundbreaking Series Was Created by The Vidal Partnership, Animus Group, Zeal Television and Fox Sports En Español


Los Angeles, CA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–August 24, 2006–Capping off a tremendously successful and collaborative partnership, The Vidal Partnership, Animus Group, Zeal Television, and Fox Sports en Español nabbed “Best Variety or Reality Show” honors for “El Reto Final Nissan” at the 21st Annual Imagen Awards. The winner was announced at a private reception Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Established in 1985, The Imagen Awards encourage and recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos in all media and aim to increase Latino representation at all levels of the entertainment industry. “El Reto Final Nissan” bested submissions from MTV (“MADE: Girly Girl”) and LATV (“LATV Shadows” and “Mex 2 the Max”).

In 1997, Mexico and the U.S. competed against each other twice to qualify for the 1998 World Cup. Both games resulted in a draw. “El Reto Final Nissan,” a five-part reality show that aired exclusively in Spanish on Fox Sports en Español in April and May 2006, tells the story of the original matches and of the intense competition that characterizes them through archival footage of the games and interviews with the players and devoted fans. In five, unscripted episodes, players who qualified for the U.S. and Mexico teams nine years ago were ambushed, persuaded to join their former colleagues, and put through intense training sessions and practices to prepare them for the ultimate rematch.

Hosted by CBS daytime drama “The Bold and The Beautiful’s” Lorenzo Lamas, 16 awards were presented at the 21st Annual Imagen Awards in categories including film and television, plus the Imagen Foundation presented five additional awards including Creative Achievement, Lifetime Achievement, President’s Award, the Norman Lear Award, and the foundation’s first National Leadership Award.
