Searches related to the death of the King of Pop not only topped Yahoo! En Espanol’s Pop list, but also set multiple records across Yahoo! properties in the U.S. and around the world. Starting the night of June 25, searches for Michael Jackson’s legendary music surged. As details about Jackson’s death began to surface, users began looking for information on prescription drugs including Demerol, the UCLA Medical Center (the hospital Jackson was taken to after he collapsed), and also searched for answers related to lingering questions like “why did Michael Jackson die.” The story “Michael Jackson Rushed to Hospital” was the most clicked on story in Yahoo! history, receiving 800,000 clicks within 10 minutes.

“Michael Jackson” was not only the most searched for term in June, but also broke the record as the most searched for item in a single day, breaking even the record set by the 2008 U.S. presidential elections.

Janet Jackson also made the list last month as users searched for the singer’s emotional appearance at the BET Awards where she told fans, “To you, Michael is an icon, to us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts.” Searches for actress Farrah Fawcett also spiked late last month as the former Charlie’s Angel lost her battle with cancer.

In addition, after much speculation in the media about his sexual orientation, Adam Lambert, the runner up of American Idol Season 8, was also among the most popular searches in June as he admitted to Rolling Stone magazine that he is gay. Other Pop favorites last month included actresses Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Vieth and Demi Moore.

In addition to the most popular overall topics, Yahoo! Pop also reveals the Top Ten Searches in six other categories: entertainment, music, technology, celebrities, news and sports. During the month of June, Adam Lambert and Transformers 2 star Megan Fox were the most searched for in the celebrity category. Searches for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Brazilian soccer player, and Real Madrid, the Spanish soccer club, dominated the sports category as the latter offered Manchester United $131 million dollars for the soccer star. The King of Pop also topped last month’s news category and Yahoo! users searched for news on the new iPhone 3Gs, the most popular topic in the technology category.

Updated daily, Yahoo! Pop search results showcase the diverse interests and concerns of U.S. Hispanics around the net, from gorgeous celebrity sightings and salacious political news to funny jokes and the latest consumer obsessions. To come up with the Yahoo! Pop Top 10 list, Yahoo! created a unique algorithm which scans anonymous query logs from Yahoo! Search across a variety of categories to see what themes and trends bubble up to the surface. Individual searches are never used to develop these lists.

Every day millions of people visit Yahoo! to search for news, hobbies, curiosities, and all types of information. By putting of all of the searches together, the site displays the topics that are of most interest to people. To view the most popular searches of the day, click on ‘Pop’ on the Yahoo!
