Online Mating: Just For Men(R) Haircolor ‘First Impressions’ Survey Reveals Truths About Appearance, Attraction and Cyber Dating

Los Angeles, CA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–January 3, 2005–When it comes to making a good first impression in the dating scene, online matchmaking can prove to be the most difficult. Just in time for the New Year, Just For Men Haircolor is releasing findings from a national “First Impressions” Survey to help singles find their perfect cyber sweetie.

The blind online survey of 7,000 online daters at top dating Web site, http://www.Date.com, polled members at least 18 years old. The survey gauged various elements of physical appearance and attraction as they relate to meeting a mate. It found that the biggest turn-off for a cyber dater is gray hair. An overwhelming 86% of women and 91% of men said they would not date someone with gray hair, preferring instead someone who looks younger.

Focus on the Photo

When it comes to catching someone’s eye, making a great first impression is critical – especially when cyber dating. Fifty-six percent of respondents said the first thing they check out when reviewing an online profile is the photo. Additionally, respondents noted that they also look at the following before determining whether to contact a potential mate: Where the person lives (17%); age (10%); how well they write and spell (6%); their weight (3%); and their profession (2%).

Find the Fountain of Youth

While many Americans continually seek the eternal fountain of youth, shaving years off their appearance can be easy and inexpensive. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said shaving off facial hair is the easiest way for a man to look younger. Additionally, respondents suggested: getting rid of gray hair (34%); buying more modern clothes (21%); moisturizing (5%); and growing a mustache or beard (2%).

Reinforcing that women want a man with a youthful appearance, 85% of respondents said they are more likely to date a man without gray hair. However, women would prefer gray hair (63%) to a bald head (37%).

Honesty is the Best Policy

When it comes to lying, experts agree just don’t do it. When dating online, both men and women admit they’ve gone on a date only to find that the person lied on e-mails or in a profile. Twenty percent of men and 28 % of women have had a first date shocker. An overwhelming 73% of respondents said they’ve been lied to about body type.

“As the old adage goes, honesty is the best policy,” said Ross. “I always advise members to be upfront in their profiles and honest in their e-mail communications. No one wants to be surprised or disappointed, especially during that long-awaited first date.”

What Men and Women Want

When asked the most important physical feature in a potential date, half of all respondents (50%) said body shape. However, men are much more inclined (60%) to be partial to body shape as opposed to women (32%).
