HOUSTON, TX–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–December 10, 2003–Cardeo announced today that Dr. Alvin Tarlov, executive director, Texas Program for Society and Health (TPSH) at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, will deliver a keynote address at The Schull Institute Medical Conference sponsored by Cardeo(TM) (http://www.cardeo.com) this coming February 12th and 13th, 2004, at Reliant Center, just prior to the two-day Cardeo Consumer Expo.

Cardeo and The Schull Institute, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting initiatives to improve healthcare for vulnerable populations, are partnering to present the first-ever Medical Conference and Consumer Expo whose mission is to foster a universal commitment to eradicating heart disease. The conference is a two-day symposium for medical professionals focusing on the latest discoveries and technologies for prevention. The conference will be followed by the two-day Cardeo Consumer Expo, a one-of-a-kind event that will for the first time bring together 20,000 healthcare professionals, insurers, vendors and consumers under one roof to take on the nation’s number one killer…heart disease.

In addition to his position as the executive director for the TPSH at the Baker Institute, Dr. Tarlov is the Sid Richardson and Taylor and Robert H. Ray Senior Fellow in Health Policy at the Baker Institute and a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Dr. Tarlov holds the distinction of leading the first-ever major research program joining the resources of Rice University and the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center to identify social and societal determinants of the health of the world’s population in order to develop public policies that could contribute a significant decrease in illness and an increase in well-being and productivity.

“The TPSH is based on the premise that the best health programs are those that prevent the chances that individuals become ill in the first place, which is also the goal of The Schull Institute Medical Conference,” said Kim Dunn, MD, PhD, medical conference director and a practicing private physician and associate dean of the School of Health Information Sciences at UTHSC-H. “We are delighted that Dr. Tarlov will speak at our event to help motivate the medical community to focus on ‘Prevention Before Intervention’, the conference’s theme, so heart disease can be completely eradicated.”

Prior to joining the Baker Institute, Dr. Tarlov was the executive director of the Health Institute at the New England Medical Center in Boston and professor of health promotion and chairman of the Mind/Brain/Body Society and Health Initiative at Harvard University.

The Baker Institute is strictly non-partisan and dedicated to the highest standards of intellectual excellence and integrity with the goal of helping bridge the gap between the theory and practice of public policy by drawing together experts from academia, government, the media, business, and non-governmental organizations. By so doing, the institute will broaden the professional perspective and personal understanding of all those involved in the study, formulation, execution, and criticism of public policy.

The Baker Institute is an integral part of Rice University, one of the nation’s most distinguished institutions of higher education. The Honorable James A. Baker III, the 61st Secretary of State and 67th Secretary of Treasury serves as the Institute’s Honorary Chair. The Baker Institute’s founding director, the Honorable Edward P. Djerejian, is a career diplomat and former American Ambassador to Israel and Syria and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.
