Washington, DC–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–July 19, 2007–Families in the Miami area can enjoy diverse activities that are free and open to the public from Saturday, July 21, to Tuesday, July 24, at the Annual Conference of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. The activities offered – including Latino Expo USA with music, product giveaways, and entertainment; workshops in Spanish; and health and homeownership fairs – will appeal to all ages. The event kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Latino Expo USA, presented by State Farm Insurance Companies, is a free, family-friendly expo with fun and informative activities. At Latino Expo USA, the whole family can enjoy games, raffles, prizes, live music, dancing, food, and product giveaways and receive information from more than 250 exhibitors. Children – and grownups – can pose for photos with favorite TV characters including Nina and Elmo from PBS’s KIDS Sprout, PBS’s Maya and Miguel, and many more at the Kids Trail, presented by McDonald’s. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Mario Lopez, Extra! correspondent and star of Dancing With the Stars, and hip-hop artist Pitbull, the star of MUN2’s Pitbull’s La Esquina, and get autographs from local celebrities. Latino Expo USA will also feature live performances from local Miami talent on the Entertainment Stage.
Saturday will kick off with the NCLR Diabetes Dash, a 5k run/walk which aims to strengthen public awareness of diabetes. The race is open to all, and free registration is available at http://www.nclr.org/conference. On-site registration opens at 5:30 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center, located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd. The race begins bright and early at 7:00 a.m., get there early for the warm-up led by the U.S. Marine Corps. Free T-shirts, information on diabetes prevention techniques and programs, as well as diabetes screenings, will be available.
On Saturday and Sunday, Latino Expo USA also features the Homeownership Fair and the Health Fair. The Homeownership Fair, presented by Countrywide Financial, offers free credit reports and other expert resources for families seeking information and counseling on such topics as establishing credit, qualifying and applying for mortgage loans, and working with realtors. The Health Fair, presented by PhRMA, features bilingual health professionals, free health screenings, information on access to health programs and services, and family health tips. The Health Fair’s free screenings include blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and HIV/AIDS, among others.
Also on Saturday, NCLR – in collaboration with the ya es hora ¡Ciudadanía! South Florida Campaign and ConAgra Foods – will host a special session to help those who are eligible for U.S. citizenship to get information on and assistance with the application process. Saturday and Sunday feature Spanish-language workshops on citizenship, health, homeownership, and financial literacy which are free and open to the public.
CINExpo, a national Latino documentary film festival, will run throughout the weekend, featuring six films, including “Lalo Guerrero: The Original Chicano,” “Shattered Dreams,” and “From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale.”
A highlight for Monday, July 23, is Career Day, when various exhibitors at Latino Expo USA will accept résumés between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and between 2:30 and 5:00 p.m. Information at the Expo entrance will identify which exhibitors are participating in this program.
