El Paso, TX–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – US NEWSWIRE)–September 9, 2005–The University of Texas at El Paso has been named the top engineering school for Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine.

The magazine’s September 2005 issue ranks the top 10 graduate schools for Hispanics in a variety of disciplines. The magazine has annually ranked the top 10 business and law schools; this year coverage was expanded to include engineering and medical schools.

In selecting UTEP as the top school, Hispanic Business cites the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), which calls UTEP “a model for other engineering institutions who say that today’s minority young people from low-income families can’t succeed in a rigorous math- or science-based discipline.”

Hispanic Business also used graduate enrollment and number of degrees awarded to determine schools’ rankings. Compared to other ranked schools, UTEP’s numbers were the highest or among the highest in each category:

— Total engineering school graduate enrollment: 244

— Hispanic engineering school graduate enrollment: 67

— Percent Hispanic graduate enrollment: 27.5%

— Total postgraduate degrees earned: 153

— Postgraduate degrees earned: 36 by Hispanics

— Percent of postgraduate degrees: 23.5% earned by Hispanics

The honor comes on the heels of other notable achievements by UTEP’s College of Engineering. Last spring, UTEP was selected to PACE, the Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering program. The PACE designation brought with it a $169 million in-kind donation of computer-engineering software and equipment from General Motors and other PACE corporate partners.
