ESPN Deportes Debuts Today

ESPN2 To Simulcast ESPN Deportes SportsCenter to Commemorate Network Launch

NEW YORK, NY–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–January 7, 2004–To mark the launch of ESPN Deportes, ESPN2 will simulcast several editions of the new Spanish-language production of SportsCenter over the next seven days.

From January 8 – January 14, the 2 a.m. ET (11 p.m. PT) 30-minute edition of ESPN Deportes SportsCenter will also be televised live on ESPN2, which reaches close to 87 million homes in the U.S. A special one-hour edition of ESPN Deportes SportsCenter at 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT) on Sunday, January 11, will also be simulcast.

ESPN2 will give viewers a chance to preview ESPN Deportes and its own version of SportsCenter, which will feature anchors Michele LaFountain, Heriberto Murrieta, Fernando Palomo, and Jorge Eduardo Sanchez Perez.

The ESPN2 simulcast will also feature ESPN Deportes own “Bottom line” in Spanish with the latest scores and sports news and information.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for a nationwide audience to check out ESPN Deportes and sample our programming,” said Lino Garcia, general manager, ESPN Deportes. “We are very proud of our new Spanish-language production of SportsCenter and we feel that it will up hold the standard of excellence that SportsCenter has established over the past 24 years.”

ESPN Deportes will debut at 8:00 p.m. ET with Somos ESPN Deportes, a show that will preview key programming and feature an array of Latino sports stars, including Eduardo Najera of the Dallas Mavericks, Bernie Williams of the New York Yankees, and veteran race car driver Adrian Fernandez. Somos ESPN Deportes will be followed by the inaugural edition of SportsCenter at 8:30 p.m. ET and full, on-site coverage in Dallas of the Warriors vs. Mavericks at 9:00 p.m. ET. Live editions of SportsCenter will follow at 11 p.m. ET and 2:00 a.m. ET.

Following the January 7 launch, ESPN Deportes plans to showcase more than 200 live events in its first year, featuring the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, National Football League, UEFA Champions League, Liga del Pacifico baseball from Mexico, Wimbledon, the French Open, selected boxing events, and much more.

In addition to its live event telecasts, ESPN Deportes will also offer a variety of sports news and information shows. Anchored by SportsCenter, the roster of programs will also include Fuera de Juego, a round table discussion of the world of soccer, Perfiles, which offers revealing interviews with Latin American sports stars, Goles de España, a Spanish soccer analysis and highlights show, and NFL Semanal and RPM Semanal, which will offer weekly insights into the NFL and the world of auto racing.
