NEW YORK–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 2, 2003–Building on its
effort to serve the Hispanic sports fan, ESPN is again teaming up with ABC Radio
Networks to produce ESPN Deportes Radio, which will offer exclusive Spanish-language
broadcasts of Major League Baseball’s League Championship Series and World Series,
beginning October 7.
ESPN Deportes Radio will offer a unique broadcast for each game, with its own
on-site production team featuring Spanish-language play-by-play, analysis, interviews,
and commercials. Commentators for the World Series and National League Championship
Series will include Hall of Fame broadcaster and longtime radio voice of the
Dodgers’ Spanish-language broadcasts Jaime Jarrin, joined by Billy Berroa, radio
voice of the Mets’ Spanish-language broadcasts. Eduardo Ortega, radio voice
of the Padres’ Spanish-language broadcasts, will call the American League Championship
Series.
Major League Baseball on ESPN Deportes Radio began earlier this year with the
broadcast of the 74th All-Star Game. The League Championship Series and World
Series on ESPN Deportes Radio will be carried by affiliates in many of the top
Hispanic markets including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix,
and San Diego.
The ESPN Deportes initiative began in 2000 when ESPN and MLB offered Spanish-language
telecasts of a small number of Sunday NightBaseball games. The network was officially
launched on April 1, 2001 as a 52-week block of exclusive Spanish-language Sunday
night sports, featuring Sunday Night Baseball, Sunday Night NFL, and exclusive
boxing matches.
In January, ESPN is planning to launch ESPN Deportes as a 24-hour, 7 day-a-week
network offering a mix of live sports leagues and events, as well as a selection
of Spanish-language sports news and information shows, including a new version
of SportsCenter.
