Beach and Outdoor Sports Lovers Should Protect themselves from Harmful UV Rays this Summer

UV Rays are Responsible for Photokeratitis as well as Skin Cancer

Pinellas Park, FL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–July 22, 2004–During summer, Hispanics traditionally tend to play water sports and outdoor sports such as skating, soccer, and volleyball. Many times when practicing sports, they worry about having the complete set of equipment, forgetting about one very important detail when it comes to taking care of their skin and eyes: proper glasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Almost 60 percent of the Hispanic population use prescription glasses, however, they are not aware that the important thing is to protect themselves from the sun’s rays, especially if means being outdoors or going to the beach and being exposed to UVA and UVB rays.

“People who use prescription glasses should know that UV rays are responsible for burns and skin cancer, particularly in the delicate area surrounding the eyes, as well as photokeratitis. These rays also weaken the eye’s macula in an accumulative manner. Protecting yourself from UV rays is easy using photochromic lenses such as those made by Transitions that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays,” said Dr. Madeline Romeu, OD, FAAO. “Not all tinted glasses or regular sunglasses provide adequate protection for athletes, unlike some photochromic lenses which block 100 of UV rays.”

Transitions(R) Lenses look like normal lenses but have the capacity to automatically transform themselves into dark lenses when exposed to sunlight thanks to photosensitive technology.

“In the case of athletes, Transitions(R) Lenses are perfectly adaptable since they are available in polycarbonate, , recommended for athletes due to higher impact resistance. But the best thing is that the photochromic lenses not only offer protection for your eyes, but also to the delicate area surrounding the eyes which is more susceptible to skin cancer,” added Dr. Romeu.
