IRVING, Texas, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Extended stays in the hospital, family responsibilities, financial distress and a lack of resources are just a few situations than can bring the “regular” educational process to a halt. A GED is just the opposite. It can be a gateway to a higher education and a better future for those who might otherwise not have had the opportunity.
First Choice Power and the Texas Education Agency partnered this year to sponsor 100 General Education Development Tests (GED) in communities across the state. The First Choice Power GED Scholarship gave qualified customers and community members wishing to get their GED an opportunity to do so.
“At First Choice Power, we know that a GED opens doors of higher education, jobs and promotions,” said Michael Swart, vice president of marketing for First Choice Power, “and we wanted to help open those doors.”
Often those doors came with life-changing tears, said Ed Heise, GED/CEHI coordinator for Cypress Fairbanks.
“A mother and her daughter, a 10th-grader who had withdrawn from our school district prior to the birth of her baby two years ago, came in to the center to pre-register for the GED,” Heise said. “When I told them that she qualified for the First Choice Power GED Scholarship, they both were very appreciative with the mother giving us a tearful ‘thank you.'”
First Choice Power is a proud supporter of the communities it serves. The centers that offered First Choice Power GED scholarships were: Alvin Community College, Cypress Fairbanks ISD and Galveston College.
“This was a great way to support and give back to the community,” said Paris Ealy, GED state administrator. “It was an opportunity to provide further education and job advancement for First Choice Power customers. For others in the community, it is simply the proof they needed to validate the importance of education for themselves, their families and their community. We appreciate First Choice Power taking the lead to help their customers obtain their GED and make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Texas.”
