MAUMEE, Ohio, May 1 /PRNewswire/ — Your home’s entryway can be a beautiful reflection of your personal taste and style — unless you’re cursed with the ugliest door in all the land. Now, Therma-Tru Doors is ready to break the spell with the kickoff of its fourth annual “Ugliest Door in America” contest, offering the winners an elegant front door makeover to complement their home’s architecture.

The popular contest, which intentionally seeks out the utterly ugliest doors, launches May 1 in conjunction with National Home Improvement Month. Whether it’s peeling paint, warped wood, crummy colors, lousy locks or gritty glass, it’s all fair game in this door to-door competition. Two winners will be chosen, one in a video category and the other in a written essay category, and announced this fall by Tom Kraeutler of “The Money Pit.” The winners will receive a Therma-Tru door system valued up to $5,000.

Homeowners are invited to visit to review the rules and regulations and enter to win. New this year is the opportunity to submit entries in a choice of two formats — either a written essay with door photos or a one-minute video describing why they deserve to win a new entry or patio door system from Therma-Tru. Contest entries will be accepted through July 1, 2008.

“This contest is all about showing homeowners the dramatic difference that a beautiful entry door can make in putting their home’s best face forward,” says Sara Theis, public relations manager. “Year after year, our winners just can’t believe the transformation that occurs when a well-built door that complements their home’s architectural style is installed.”

From “Whoa, That’s Ugly,” to “Wow!”

Last year’s winners were wowed by the impact of a new door on their home. Merle and Marsha Hall of Granger, Iowa, moved into their 1929 Craftsman-style home in 1982 and had remodeled almost every room, but somehow the front door always evaded them. Shortly after they moved in, the door had been stripped but was never stained. For the next 25 years the family passed through it daily to the car, to the neighbors, and to school and play. But over time, the door’s worn-out, cracked wood was simply too far gone, and it sagged despite several attempts to keep it straight. “I’d have to say ours is the ugliest front door on the block, if not the whole town,” Marsha wrote in her essay.

The Hall ‘s entry was replaced with a new Classic-Craft(R) American Style door that features simple, straightforward lines that are the hallmarks of Craftsman architecture. The fiberglass door system provides the rich look of wood but it won’t rot, crack or split like wood doors or dent, rust or corrode like steel doors.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that we won,” said Marsha Hall. “This door fits the architecture of our house which was very important to us.”

Second place winners Janis and Ed Bouleware of Montgomery, Texas, also had front doors in desperate need of replacement. The hot Texas summers had warped, split and eroded their wood double doors, and they were so inefficient she could see the sun coming through the cracks all year round. Another ugly door trait was the doors’ drab, faded finish and mismatched hardware.

The Boulwares received a new set of fiberglass double entry doors with five times the energy efficiency of wood. The Boulware’s double entry doors are from the Classic-Craft(R) Rustic Collection with Augustine(TM) decorative glass. Janis says the doors are a perfect complement to their home. “It’s beautiful. I love the glass and the colors. I think the neighbors will appreciate looking at something better than what we had there!”

“An upgraded front door is going to have a remarkable impact on the curb appeal of both of these homes,” says Theis. “In a matter of hours, two of America’s ugliest front doors have magically morphed into elegant, inviting entryways.”
