Chicago, IL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–February 5, 2004–Saint Anthony Hospital’s Programa CIELO (Center for Information & Education Latino Optimum) is announcing a new 12 –week program taught by Maria Ochsner, Certified Health Educator and Instructor. The Heart Smart Program is held at the Hall of St. Roman’s Church, 2311 South Washtenaw in Chicago on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm and on Friday mornings from 9 am – 11 am. These free, on-going sessions and open to the public and are targeted towards Latina women of all ages although all interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Currently the top three heart disease risk factors particularly for Latina women are lack of exercise, lack of a healthy balanced diet and stress. The weekly meetings are fun, and combine socializing and camaraderie while educating women about the benefits of good nutrition, help to establish healthy eating habits and discuss personal barriers towards exercise and efficient daily management of stress.
On Friday, February 27 from 9 am to 11am, Dr. Elizabeth Becerra, from Saint Anthony’s Internal Medicine department will offer free consultations and cholesterol screenings for all the participants. Dr. Becerra, a member of the Saint Anthony community since 1998, is bilingual and specializes in Women’s Health, Diabetes Management, Adolescent Medicine and Geriatrics.
Programa CIELO Heart Smart for Women sessions are designed to raise awareness about the number one killer of women in the U.S. According to Dr. Becerra, “more female Hispanic Americans die from heart disease and stroke than cancer, diabetes and accidents combined. Recent studies show that Latina women are less likely to dedicate time to take care of themselves. They tend to care for their families first rather then putting their own health and well being foremost.” Programa CIELO is the community outreach program developed by Saint Anthony Hospital to educate area women about health issues that affect them and their families. These free programs are supported by the Illinois Department of Public Health – Office of Women’s Health, http://www.idph.state.il.us/home.
