Washington, DC–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–August 29, 2007–Providing information critical to success in life is the unspoken north star of the print media industry. Today the National Hispanic Press Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of 10 newspapers throughout the United States as partners in elevating the awareness and importance of Hispanic culture to the ongoing success of this country. Each newspaper will publish the winning essay of a national college-bound student contest sponsored by Continental Airlines. Maria Murillo of Buena Park, California won with her essay on “Laughter/Risa,” which highlighted the joy of Latin American culture and its impact on the U.S. In partnership with these newspapers Ms. Murillo will receive national attention as a budding writer and six roundtrip airline tickets from Continental Airlines to visit any college of her choosing.

“We are pleased so many newspapers came forward to apply for this partnership with our Foundation in helping this bright young Latina begin to develop a career that will now include having been published nationally,” said Eddie Escobedo, Chair of the Foundation. He went on to say “that kind of experience will shine on her resume for many years to come. I am so proud of these newspapers for stepping forward to build awareness of her skills and our rich Hispanic culture.”

The winning newspaper partners are: Para Todos and Vida Newspaper in Los Angeles, CA; El Dia and El Extra Community News in Chicago, IL; El Extra in Dallas, TX; El Observador in San Francisco, CA; Diario San Diego in San Diego, CA; El Tiempo Latino in Washington, DC; Impacto in Philadelphia, PA; and El Periodico USA in Brownsville-McAllen, TX.
