Celebrating Latina Leaders during Hispanic Heritage Month Event at the National Press Club

Hundreds gather to Honor Groundbreaking Latinas, and Awardee Linda Chavez-Thompson, at CATALINA and HOPE’s 2nd Annual event September 22.

Vienna, Va.–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–September 11, 2003–Hispanic celebrities and community leaders come together to honor groundbreaking Latinas for the second annual “Celebrating Latina Leadership” reception, hosted by CATALINA magazine and Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE). The star-studded Hispanic Heritage Month reception, which begins at 6:30 p.m., will be held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on September 22, 2003.

The event, which honors the seven Hispanic women of Congress, also features the 2003 Groundbreaking LATINA OF THE YEAR award ceremony. This year, AFL-CIO Vice President Linda Chavez Thompson (pictured here) is being awarded for her work in the Hispanic community. In 1995, Chavez-Thompson became the first Hispanic, and the first woman, elected to be the Executive Vice-President of the AFL-CIO. In 2003, she was nominated by CATALINA readers, and selected by a board of HOPE associates, for the 2nd annual award.

“Linda Chavez-Thompson’s accomplishments speak for themselves,” Elmy Bermejo, HOPE president, says.

CATALINA publisher, and HOPE associate, Cathy Areu Jones, agrees, adding: “Linda Chavez-Thompson continues to be a source of inspiration and an example for all of us to follow, on so many fronts. We believe it’s important to acknowledge and honor groundbreakers like Linda Chavez-Thompson who are paving the way for future Latinas in power.”
