Unsung Heroes to be Honored for Their Efforts to Save Lives


MIAMI, Fl.–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–October 22, 2003–On October 25, Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency will present its 2003 “Luminare Awards” to unsung heroes, medical professionals and local hospitals, who have demonstrated extraordinary support of its mission to save and enhance the lives of as many people as possible through organ and tissue donation. To assist with the honors will be Gala hosts Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Florida State Representative William Holloway, who will be joined by CBS 4 health correspondent and original “Survivor” reality show castaway Dr. Sean Kenniff as the Master of Ceremonies. The Awards Gala, to be held at the Sheraton Bal Harbour Hotel in Miami Beach, will commence with a reception at 7:30 p.m., followed by a dinner program at 8:45p.m.

Nominees were selected from among sixty-six South Florida hospitals in the categories of Physician, Critical Care Nurse and Unit, Emergency Room Nurse and Unit, Operating Room Nurse and Unit, Pastoral Care, and Social Worker/Other. The award winners will be announced during the dinner program to be attended by healthcare professionals from hospitals including Baptist, Boca Raton, Broward General, Delray Medical, Holy Cross, JFK Medical, Jackson Memorial, Lawnwood Regional, Memorial Regional, Mercy, Miami Children’s, Naples Community, North Broward, Northwest Medical, Palmetto General, Parkway, South Miami, St. Mary’s and West Boca.

The gala event also commemorates Life Alliance’s 25th anniversary. “The enduring commitment of our healthcare partners to refer potential donors and support patient families has contributed to our status as one of the nation’s most proficient and successful organ recovery organizations in the nation for more than two decades,” said Life Alliance’s Executive Director Leslie Cortina. The following individuals, who have supported Life Alliance and its mission to save lives for over a quarter of a century, will also be honored with a “25 Years of Saving Lives” Service Award:

— Patty Anzalone, RN – Naples Community Hospital

— Connie Barden, RN, CCRN – Mercy Hospital

— Cleo Stern, RN – Lawnwood Regional Medical Center

— Phillip Villanueva, M.D. – University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital

— Basil Yates, M.D. – Palmetto General Hospital

Donor families and transplant recipients will also be in attendance at the gala. All proceeds will be devoted to Life Alliance’s vitally important donor family aftercare and public education programs.

Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency was established in 1978 and has the unique mission of providing transplantation opportunities for patients in South Florida by maximizing the availability of organs and tissues, educating healthcare professionals and the community about organ donation, and providing support and comfort to bereaved donor families. It operates as a division of the University of Miami School of Medicine’s DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, and is a tax-exempt, nonprofit community service, organ procurement organization that is certified and regulated by the federal government.
