IKEA Breaks Ground for New Haven Store as Part of U.S. Expansion

Fourth Tri-State store, at I-95 and I-91 junction, will open in Summer 2004 as only store in Connecticut

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–September 4, 2003–IKEA, the leading home furnishings retailer, today officially broke ground for its new store opening next Summer [2004] in New Haven, CT, to be built on 20-acres at the intersection of the I-95 and I-91 interchange.

The 306,000 square foot store will be built at-grade with approximately 1200 parking spaces at-grade on a site plan designed around preserving the existing Marcel Breuer office building, most recently used as the offices of Pirelli Tires. Besides jobs created during construction, more than 400 coworkers will join the IKEA family when the new store opens.

“We know there are many IKEA customers in Connecticut so we are thrilled to bring them their own IKEA store at this perfect location,” explained Pat Smith, IKEA real estate manager. “The City of New Haven has made us feel truly welcome. We look forward to being active partners in the community.”

IKEA currently has more than 185 stores in 31 countries, including 18 stores in the United States and 11 stores in Canada. This January, the company began an aggressive North American expansion effort that includes at least 5 new stores a year for the next ten years. This expansion will balance increasing the presence of IKEA in existing markets with entry into newer markets. Other U.S. stores planned include: Bloomington, MN; Dublin, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Somerville, MA; Tempe, AZ and a relocation in Houston, TX.

Since its founding in 1943, IKEA has offered a wide range of home furnishings and accessories of good design and function, at low prices so the majority of the people can afford them. IKEA is recognized as a socially responsible company, and continuously supports initiatives that benefit causes such as children and the environment.
