Canton, MI–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–May 19, 2005–With company representatives, township officials and community leaders on-hand, IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today began demolition of a former Super Kmart store that will give way to a future IKEA store, opening Summer 2006 in Canton Township. The 311,000 square-foot future IKEA Canton will become the 28th IKEA store in the U.S., and fourth in the Upper Midwest, joining stores in: Schaumburg, IL (opened 1998); Bloomington, MN (opened 2004); and in Bolingbrook, IL (opening this Fall).

Under construction on 21 acres at the intersection of Ford and Haggerty roads off I-275, the future IKEA Canton will present nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 different room settings, four complete homes, a supervised children’s play area, and a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries or salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features will include a Children’s IKEA area in the showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store.

In addition to 500 construction jobs, approximately 350 coworkers will join the IKEA family when the new store is fully built. “We are thrilled that work is now underway on the site of the future IKEA Canton,” said Pat Merwin, IKEA real estate manager. “It is an exciting opportunity for us to bring our unique family-friendly shopping experience closer to Michigan customers who currently are driving to Chicago or Toronto. IKEA Canton will allow them to visit IKEA more frequently, while also introducing IKEA to new customers who may not know us yet.”

IKEA currently has more than 210 stores in 33 countries, including 22 in the U.S. IKEA Canton will be the 28th. Other planned U.S. store locations include: Atlanta, GA; Bolingbrook, IL; Brooklyn, NY; Dublin, CA; Frisco, TX; Somerville, MA; Stoughton, MA; and West Sacramento, CA.

Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered a wide range of home furnishings and accessories of good design and function, at prices so low the majority of people can afford them. IKEA has been named – for two years in a row – to Working Mother’s annual list of the “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers,” and this year to Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” IKEA is recognized as a socially responsible company, and continuously supports initiatives that benefit causes such as children and the environment.
