IKEA New Haven Celebrates its Grand Opening with a Neighborly Sleepover

Five Local Neighbors Sleep out with IKEA and Benefit Save the Children’s Literacy Programs, which Help America's Children in Need Read and Succeed

New Haven, CT–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–July 23, 2004–IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, is opening its 200th IKEA store worldwide in New Haven on July 28 at 9:00 a.m. The Honorable Mayor John DeStefano and IKEA New Haven store manager Gail Franc will participate in a traditional log-sawing ceremony before officially opening the doors of the 20th U.S. IKEA store to its neighbors.

IKEA New Haven grand opening festivities include a special “Welcome Neighbors” campaign that begins on July 25. Five “neighbors” who qualified via a radio promotion, will sleep out for three days and nights at the IKEA New Haven store through grand opening. In return, the five neighbors will receive a $2,000 IKEA gift card along with a free bed, mattress and linens. Their participation will also help support a worthy cause; IKEA is donating $10,000 ($2,000 per neighbor) to Save the Children, the leading independent organization that creates real and lasting change for children in need in the U.S., which has its headquarters in Connecticut. Also, for each IKEA visitor that visits the “neighbors” from July 25 through July 28 (grand opening), IKEA will donate $1 to benefit Save the Children’s literacy programs that help America’s children in need read and succeed. Mark Shriver, vice president and managing director of Save the Children will also be at the grand opening ceremonies with colleagues and their children.

“Everyone in the New Haven area has welcomed us with open arms, and we are so excited about our IKEA New Haven grand opening,” said Gail Franc, store manager, IKEA New Haven. “At IKEA, we provide so many inspirational design ideas, as well as products and styles to choose from, we believe all of our neighbors can create the life they really want at home.”

As the 200th IKEA store worldwide, IKEA New Haven celebrates this significant milestone with various grand opening festivities that feature a focus on the number “200”:

— A Chance for a Seat – The first 200 adults (18 and over) in line on July 28 will receive a free POÄNG armchair (valued at $99).

— A Chance for a Makeover – Visitors can enter a random drawing via drop boxes to win $10,000 in IKEA home furnishings and accessories to help makeover their home. One winner will be chosen on August 1.

— Just for Kids – The first 200 children (under 12) in line on July 28 will receive a free IKEA BRUM bear soft-toy.

— Easy Easel Fun – For every MÅLA easel purchased, IKEA will donate $2 to Save the Children in support of the organization’s literacy programs.
