Golf Sponsor Teams with RADD and Florida Department of Transportation to Provide Five Hours of Free Safe Rides Home for Miami Residents and PGA Tournament Fans

MIAMI, March 20 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — PGA golfer Jim Furyk strives to drive safely down the fairways this week at the World Golf Championships CA Championship at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa here. Tonight, his sponsor, JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION, will handle the safe driving duties by teaming with the road safety charity RADD and the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) to offer free rides to remind adult golf fans about the importance of safe driving.

In addition, the Florida DOT will be presented today with a Safe Driving Achievement Award by RADD, the entertainment industry’s voice for road safety, and the makers of Johnnie Walker(R), the world’s best-selling brand of blended Scotch whisky. In 2006 (the most recent year for which complete data is available), for the first time in a decade, total Florida traffic fatalities decreased from the previous year. Florida’s 2006 alcohol-related fatalities also declined 11.4 percent and the state led the nation with the largest reduction of alcohol-related fatalities.

Consumers can sign up for free rides home prior to or after their evening out on the town at the JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION station in front of the Cardozo Hotel and Oriente Restaurant located at 1300 Ocean Drive in South Beach. The free rides home will be offered from this location this evening from 9:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m., and JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION will also make a donation to RADD for each ride.

RADD is an internationally recognized non-profit organization that pairs athletes, celebrities, media partners and socially conscious sponsors to create positive attitudes about road safety. Earlier in the golf season, the Safe Drive Campaign launched with a safe driving event in New York City and the announcement of a landmark charitable challenge that would grant one million dollars to RADD should Furyk break the record for the highest percentage of safe drives hit onto the fairway in a season since 2000. Independent of Furyk breaking the record, JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION will donate $25,000 to RADD in his name.

“Our partnership with Jim Furyk and RADD encourages individuals nationwide to drink responsibly, while enjoying the great tournament in Florida this week,” said Bill Topf, Vice President of Marketing, Johnnie Walker. “We are grateful that Florida shares our commitment to safe driving.”

Randall Smith, Traffic Safety Administrator for the Florida DOT said, “The Department of Transportation takes the safety of Floridians and the state’s many visitors very seriously and their safety is the top priority in our daily work. The state appreciates the Johnnie Walker Collection’s proactive participation in educating the public about personal responsibility and safe driving and their service of providing free rides after they have enjoyed Miami’s world-class nightlife. We also appreciate RADD and the educational work they perform across the nation to bring attention to the issue of impaired driving.”

RADD President Erin Meluso said, “Jim Furyk and the Johnnie Walker Collection have been true partners in helping our organization communicate the importance of road safety. We commend the state of Florida for its efforts in reducing drunken driving crashes and we are heartened by the efforts in many other states to achieve similar successes.”

Furyk, one of the most successful players in golf, currently ranks fifth in career earnings on the PGA Tour and has played in more than 368 events over an illustrious 15-year career. Known for his unorthodox swing, Furyk’s best season to date was 2006, when he won twice, posted 14 Top 10s, finished second in money and won the Vardon Trophy for low scoring average. He also reached second in the world rankings that year.

This past June, Furyk and JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION announced a three-year sponsorship agreement. The JOHNNIE WALKER iconic striding man logo and JOHNNIE WALKER COLLECTION branding will appear on the back yoke of the neck of Furyk’s golf shirt whenever Furyk is participating in personal appearances, the PGA Tour and USGA sanctioned events.
