‘Join the Major Leagues @ your library’ for a Trip to the World Series Program Open to All Ages

Chicago, IL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–April 14, 2005–Your local library has books, magazines, Internet access, CDs and movies, but did you know that it can help you win a trip to a game of the 2005 Major League Baseball World Series?

The American Library Association (ALA), Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have teamed up for the fourth year of Join the Major Leagues @ your library®, an online contest that challenges people of all ages to use the resources available at their library to answer baseball trivia questions.

One grand-prize winner will win a trip to a game of the World Series this fall. Several runner-up prizes will also be awarded.

The program launches tomorrow at the Echo Park Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, with baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon Robinson, leading local children through trivia questions from the program. Robinson will appear at the library as a part of “Jackie Robinson Day,” celebrated tomorrow by Major League Baseball to honor her late father, who broke baseball’s color barrier.

The Join the Major Leagues @ your library trivia questions are available at http://www.ala.org/@yourlibrary/jointhemajorleagues in both English and Spanish. Players have the option to either download questions and send answers in by mail or fill in the answers online.

The library staff at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, a program supporter, developed this year’s trivia questions, which are organized by age group (10 and under, 11-13, 14-17 and 18 and older) so that family members of all ages can join in the fun together.

The Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and REFORMA, an association that promotes library services to Spanish speakers, are also supporters, as are the Association for Library Service to Children and the Public Library Association, both divisions of the ALA.

Join the Major Leagues @ your library is part of The Campaign for America’s Libraries, a national public education campaign to remind the public about the value of libraries, librarians and library workers in the 21st century.
