Washington, DC–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–June 19, 2006–On the first day of summer, June 21, the National Alliance for Hispanic Health (the Alliance) will begin a new summer health campaign to reach Hispanics, of all generations and backgrounds, in their communities, at work and while they travel and vacation this summer.
The National Alliance for Hispanic Health’s “Mobile Summer Hispanic Health Campaign” will be “Making Health Information Accessible to Hispanic Americans Wherever They Go This Summer.”
“Two of the most important health issues facing the Hispanic community during the summer months are protection from the sun (including adequate use of sunblock) as well as drinking enough water whether they are at work or at play,” says Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the Alliance and author of SALUD—A Latina’s Guide to Total Health. “These two issues sound so simple but millions in our community are unaware of the life saving importance of these simple steps to prevent skin cancer and heat stroke.”
The national helpline (1-866-783-2645 or 1-866-SU-FAMILIA) offers free, reliable and confidential health information in Spanish and English. The Su Familia Helpline is available from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday.
Given summer mobility, the Alliance’s “Mobile Summer Hispanic Health Campaign” will reach Hispanic families through an innovative two-part campaign that will publicize both a new text message campaign (send the message “SALUD” to the text message number 56658) and the 1-866-SU-FAMILIA family health helpline.
Callers to 1-866-SU-FAMILIA speak to bilingual and culturally proficient health information specialists. Callers can receive basic health information, referral to information sources for the summer health topics they have questions about, or consumer-friendly fact sheets on a range of health issues. Also, by providing their zip code, callers can receive referral to one of over 20,000 local health providers, including community and migrant health centers. The Su Familia Helpline is available from 9:00am to 6:00pm, Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday.
The National Alliance for Hispanic Health is the nation’s oldest and largest network of Hispanic health professionals. The nation’s action forum for Hispanic health, Alliance members deliver caring services to over 14 million persons every year making a daily difference in the lives of Hispanic communities.
