MIAMI, April 16 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The University of Florida Association of Hispanic Alumni (AHA), one of the largest alumni groups of the University of Florida, proudly invites alumni and friends of the University of Florida to participate in this year’s Gator Guateque Weekend festivities, which will be held on May 9 and 10, 2008 at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Doral, Florida. The weekend will consist of the second annual Gator Golf Gathering, the inaugural Gator Academic Outreach Symposium and its signature event, and the popular Gator Guayabera Guateque, which is entering its fifth year. As in previous years, proceeds from the Gator Guateque Weekend support the University of Florida Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures (“La Casita”) and fund student scholarships.
At this year’s Gator Guayabera Guateque, AHA will award Danny Ponce, one of the University of Florida’s most distinguished graduates, its highest recognition, the Gran Caiman of the Year award, for his service to the University of Florida and his community.
“We are delighted to grant our highest award to Danny Ponce, who has represented the University of Florida in a positive and successful manner for so many years,” stated AHA president Ignacio Abella. “His service to UF has been extraordinary and I can think of no one who is better qualified to receive the 2008 Gran Caiman of the Year award.” Past Gran Caiman of the Year award recipients include Dr. Eduardo Padron, Juan Galan, Dr. Pedro Greer, and last year’s award recipient Manny Fernandez.
This year, the weekend celebration will feature the Second Annual Gator Golf Gathering on May 9, and the Gator Academic Outreach Symposium and the aforementioned Fifth Annual Gator Guayabera Guateque, on May 10. This year’s Gator Guayabera Guateque emcee will be Channel 10’s Kristi Krueger, who recently was recognized by the University of Florida’s School of Journalism as an Alumni of Distinction. Guests expected to attend to the weekend activities include University of Florida president J. Bernard Machen, former Gator and current Atlanta Hawk basketball standout Al Horford (pending NBA playoffs), Coral Gables mayor Don Slesnick, Commisioner Chip Withers, and radio personality Humberto Cortina, among other notables.
Please note that AHA is expecting a sell out of all events. Tickets are on sale for $100 and sponsorships are still available for interested companies and individuals. Please note that tickets will not be sold at the event. Additionally, special rates are available for rooms at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, though availability is limited.
