Farewell game for ‘El Pibe’ Valderrama will be aired only on GolTV

Miami, FL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–January 29, 2004–GolTV will be the only United States network to air the publicized farewell game of one of the most important soccer players in Latin America live. Carlos “El Pibe” Valderrama will retire in Barranquilla this February 1st.

The game is a celebration in honor of the Colombian player’s career. Valderrama was named the most valuable soccer player in the Americas on several occasions. For this friendly game, Valderrama—who has played for teams like Deportivo Cali, Millonarios, Montpellier, Valladolid, Tampa Bay Mutiny, and Colorado Rapids—will wear the Colombian National Team’s colors for the last time.

The game will be played by a team of Colombian players against another team of stars from throughout South America and Europe. Both teams will be composed by both active players and retired legends from the sport.

The foreign team has confirmed participation by such stars as Chilavert, Cafú, Redondo, “La Brujita” Verón, Butragueño, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Ariel Ortega, Michel, Eric Cantona, “El Diablo” Etcheverry, Mexican keeper Jorge Campos, Iván Zamorano, Spanish player Emilio Butragueño, Enzo Francescoli; and the presence of Diego Armando Maradona is also expected. Carlos Salvador Bilardo will coach the team.

Playing for the Colombian National Team will be players such as René Higuita, Faryd Mondragón, Wilson Pérez, Wilmer Cabrera, Alexis Mendoza, Jorge Bermúdez, Gerardo Bedoya, Leonel Alvarez, Jorge Bolaño, Mauricio “Chicho” Serna, Freddy Rincón, Iván René Valenciano, Faustino Asprilla, “El Tren” Valencia, Anthony D’Avila, and Arnoldo Iguarán. And just like the famous Colombian National Team of the 90’s, the team’s coaches will be Francisco Maturana and Hernán Darío “El Bolillo” Gómez.

The farewell game will be aired by GolTV in the United States, exclusively and live, February 1 at 7:00 p.m. EST.

GOLTV is the first and only television network devoted 100 % to airing soccer in the United States. Planned and promoted by the Uruguayan firm Tenfield, GOLTV was established in 2002 and began airing its programming in February of 2003.
