NEW YORK–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–April 12, 2004–The New York Women’s Foundation (NYWF) has announced that at its annual “Celebrating Women Breakfast,” to be held at NYC’s Hilton Hotel on May 6, 2004, tennis superstar and philanthropist Billie Jean King will receive NYWF’s Vision Award for her women-focused philanthropy; and Lisa Quiroz, founding publisher of People en Español and current Vice President of Corporate Responsibility for Time Warner, will receive NYWF’s Celebrating Women Award for the significant achievements that have made her a role model for women and girls. Actress, reporter and photographer Candice Bergen will emcee this year’s Breakfast.
The Celebrating Women Breakfast will also honor local organizations that help women and girls. The NYWF will award grants ranging from $20,000 to $35,000, for a total of over $1 million, to 37 organizations before an expected audience of 2,000. Among the organizations to be honored at the Breakfast are Picture the Homeless, an organization run by and for homeless people that teaches homeless women to advocate for their rights and works to improve the emergency shelter system; and Nontraditional Employment for Women, which helps women get secure jobs in the trades as carpenters, tillers, electricians and welders.
“Our awards, the breakfast, the audience – all this is our way of confirming the Foundation’s commitment to helping all women take part in shaping their own lives, as well as to celebrate those who speak up on behalf of all of us,” said Abigail E. Disney, noted philanthropist and NYWF’s president. The Annual Celebrating Women Breakfast is NYWF’s major fundraising event and is supported by women and men from all types of professions, working women and mothers, eminent women philanthropists such as Abby Disney and Agnes Gund, and major corporations such as Lehman Brothers Holdings and Ernst & Young, among others.
“I am delighted to be part of The New York Women’s Foundation’s celebration this year. Like the NYWF, I am committed to equality and opportunity for women from all walks of life,” said Billie Jean King, recipient of NYWF’s Vision Award. Lisa Quiroz, who is receiving the NYWF’s Celebrating Women Award, said “The New York Women’s Foundation supports all women in their efforts to reach their full potential and have meaningful lives. I am honored to be part of this year’s breakfast and to share this recognition with women who have changed not only individual lives, but also the communities they serve.”
From its beginnings in 1986 – when 10 women set out to solicit contributions from their friends to help other women – The New York Women’s Foundation has raised and granted in excess of $8 million to over 150 women-run start-ups. In addition to providing funds, the NYWF also provides technical, administrative and leadership training to help these organizations so they may become and remain viable non-profits.
Tickets begin at $150 and corporate tables begin at $5,000. For more information about NYWF’s Celebrating Women Breakfast at the Hilton Hotel on May 6, 2004 from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m., call (212) 414-4342, extension 15, or visit http://www.nywf.org.
