ROCKVILLE, Md., March 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Renal Physicians Association, a national medical specialty association that represents and serves the interests of nephrology practitioners in their pursuit and delivery of quality renal care, has elected Ruben Velez, M.D., FACP, as its new President.
Dr. Velez received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan and has been a practicing nephrologist with Dallas Nephrology Associates in Texas for the past 28 years. He has served as the practice’s President and CEO for the past 10 years. Dr. Velez ranks as a highly recommended and trusted nephrologist by, Patients’ Rating and Quality, which is maintained by HealthGrades, a national independent ratings organization that assists consumers with identifying health care providers.
Dr. Velez began his two-year term as RPA President at the conclusion of the association’s annual meeting that was held March 17-20 in Washington, D.C. According to Dr. Velez, “There are many challenges and opportunities facing the nephrology specialty. We cannot sit on the sidelines and watch Federal agencies develop policies that will impact our ability to deliver quality kidney patient care. We will have a seat at the table to speak on behalf of practicing nephrologists and influence legislation and regulations that affect our patients. I intend to work with the other members of the RPA Board as well as other stakeholders in the renal community to protect our discipline and create opportunities for nephrologists to thrive in new care models. We must prepare for the rapidly evolving health care system. We cannot afford a tsunami in nephrology.”
The Renal Physicians Association (RPA) is the professional organization of nephrologists whose goal is to ensure quality care under the highest standards of medical practice for patients with kidney disease and related disorders.
