Columbus, Ohio–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–September 12, 2005–Recognizing the burgeoning Latino population in key Ohio counties, the American Heart Association has partnered with the Ohio Department of Health to promote cardiovascular health awareness among this unique risk group.

Through a grassroots media campaign, which launches today, the Latino Awareness program will provide cardiovascular health education to residents in Franklin, Defiance, Lucas and Lorain counties through targeted advertising. The campaign will encourage residents to call 1-800-AHA-USA1 for information about the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Franklin, Defiance, Lucas and Lorain counties represent a total Hispanic/Latino population of about 67,500, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. The American Heart Association will benefit from the Ohio Department of Health’s preexisting cardiovascular health alliances with local Latino populations in these counties to support the Latino Awareness campaign.

The campaign, developed in conjunction with Columbus advertising firm Fahlgren, will promote its message of cardiovascular health through Latino newspapers; Latino radio broadcasts; transit; and direct mail.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the Latino community, with stroke the No. 3 cause of death. But cultural risk factors among the Latino community can increase cardiovascular disease risk factors, particularly the effect of dietary choices on blood pressure and limited access to quality medical care and supervision following a cardiovascular health event.

The American Heart Association, regionally headquartered in Columbus, is a national voluntary health organization whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The Ohio Department of Health has as its goal the optimal health of all Ohioans led by the dedicated professionals comprising the state governmental agency.
