Coral Gables, FL–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–July 27, 2006–The University of Miami announced today that Aileen M. Ugalde has been named Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Ugalde will be the University’s chief legal officer, responsible for management of all legal issues, leading a staff that includes nine attorneys and managing outside counsel with whom UM contracts. She will also serve as the Secretary to the Board of Trustees, acting as the primary liaison between the Board and the University and will oversee a staff that coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Board as well as the Office of Internal Audits. She will assume the post in September, succeeding Robert L. Blake, who will be stepping down after 12 years in this role.

Prior to this appointment, Ugalde was Vice President for Government Affairs for the University and served as President Donna E. Shalala’s Chief of Staff. While directing the Office of the President’s activities, she also led the University’s efforts in hosting the 2004 Presidential Debates on campus. She first joined the University in 1994 as an assistant general counsel, was promoted to associate general counsel in 1998, and served as executive director to the search committee that brought President Shalala to UM in 2000.

“With her in-depth understanding of the University’s affairs, excellent judgment, and legal expertise, Aileen Ugalde will make a wonderful Vice President and General Counsel,” says President Shalala.

Ugalde, a UM alumna, graduated with honors from the UM School of Law, where she was a Harvey T. Reid Scholar and member of the University of Miami Law Review. She received her bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard University, with an honors concentration in Latin American Studies and International Relations. Prior to working at the University of Miami, she practiced commercial litigation with Akerman, Senterfitt & Eidson, P.A., specializing in employment discrimination cases.

“I am honored to take on this new challenge,” says Ugalde. “This is the best legal job in South Florida. The University of Miami is an incredible institution, and I am excited to be a part of its extraordinary trajectory.”

Ugalde resides in Miami Beach with her husband, Joe Garcia, and their daughter, Gabriela. The University of Miami is the largest private research institution in the southeastern United States. The University’s mission is to provide quality education, attract and retain outstanding students, support the faculty and their research, and build an endowment for University initiatives. http://www.miami.edu
