WASHINGTON–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–March 13, 2003–Tonight, U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao will deliver the keynote address at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 13th Annual Legislative Conference at the Capital Hilton Hotel.

Congressman Robert Menendez and White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales will be honored before an audience of Hispanic chamber of commerce presidents, business leaders, entrepreneurs, elected officials and corporate America. The USHCC Foundation will also give special recognition to White House Fellows – Cesar Conde and Cesar Aristeiguieta.

Both Congressman Menendez and White House Counsel Gonzales are being recognized for their efforts in supporting the Hispanic community. Menendez will receive the USHCC’s Chair’s Award and Gonzales will receive the President’s Award. Congressman Menendez was recently elected as the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

He is also the highest-ranking Hispanic in Congressional history and has dedicated his energy towards the Homeland Security Task Force by introducing the Bioterrorism Protection Act (BioPAct) and the United States Security Act (the USA Act) to ensure our nation’s safety.

In January of 2001, President Bush commissioned Alberto R. Gonzales, the first Hispanic appointed to serve as White House Counsel. Prior to his appointment at the White House, Gonzales served as a Justice for the Supreme Court of Texas.

He also served as Secretary of the State of Texas, where among his many duties, Gonzales was senior advisor to then-Governor George W. Bush, chief elections officer, and the Governor’s lead liaison on Mexico and border issues.

Past recipients of the USHCC’s Chair and President’s Awards have included First Lady Laura Bush; Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, William Kennard, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); and Congressman Silvestre Reyes.

The awards ceremony is the culmination of the USHCC’s Annual Legislative Conference where several hundred chamber members, Hispanic business leaders, and corporate executives gather in the nation’s capital to dialogue with Washington leaders who shape the policy that impacts Hispanic businesses. While in Washington, chamber members also meet with their Congressional representatives.

The USHCC represents the interests of more than 1.2 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States and Puerto Rico, which earn more than $200 billion annually. It serves as the umbrella organization for over 130 local Hispanic chambers nationwide, and it actively promotes the economic growth and development of Hispanic entrepreneurs.
