Williamsport, PA–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–April 11, 2007–There are 2.6 million youngsters around the world who play Little Baseball and Softball and more than a million volunteers who help them play. Little League Baseball International will honor all of them with its second annual International Opening Day Celebration, taking place this year at Diez Park in Houston, TX, at 9 AM on Friday April 13, Little League President and CEO Stephen D. Keener announced today.
To launch Little League’s 69th season, International Opening Day events will include a FunDay program with members of the East End Little League in Houston getting instruction in baseball skills, collecting autographs and participating in trivia contests. The day will also be a tribute to Little League’s Urban Initiative, which has been making sure that baseball survives and thrives in the inner cities since 2001.
“With more than 2.6 million ballplayers, Little League Baseball and Softball is the largest organized youth sports program in the world,” said Mr. Keener. “The Opening Day message for all of them is that it is really fun to play Little League Baseball and Softball. With the help of our sponsors and with programs like the Urban Initiative, we are working every day to make sure that the fun is available to every youngster who wants to play. None of this would be possible without our fabulous volunteers, so we created this event to honor them as well. Being in Houston at the home of the East End Little League is a great place to have fun and showcase the Urban Initiative.”
The April 13 FunDay stations for the East End Little Leaguers will include:
— Base Running
— Throwing Accuracy
— Trivia Contest
“It is a great honor for East End Little League and Texas District 15 that the symbolic beginning to the 2007 Little League season will be held here at Diez Park, home of East End Little League,” said Myrna Flores, president of the East End Little League. “I’m proud to say that East End is beginning its 54th year with Little League. The International Opening Day gives us a chance to say thank you to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and the Urban Initiative of Little League for making sure our league is successful in giving all kids a chance to play. The support of our league’s sponsors and the Little League International sponsors helps defray costs and makes it all possible.”
