HOLLYWOOD, Calif.–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–September 18, 2003–Family Theater Productions wins six prestigious awards for its Radio for the Latino Explosion.

For the first time in its illustrious 56-year history Family Theater won the American Scene Award for its two entries: radio dramas Rosalba and Atorados. The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFTRA, announced the winners on Aug. 16 during their annual convention. This marks the first time in the American Scene Awards’ 16-year history that a Spanish-language radio program has won. These awards recognize excellence in the employment and portrayal of minorities in programming, recordings and news media.

Once again Gabriel has blown his horn for Voz Latina radio programs. Family Theater got the news Aug. 18 that it has won two 2003 Gabriel Awards and one Certificate of Merit in the 38th annual competition sponsored by the Catholic

Academy for Communications Arts Professionals. The categories and winning programs are:

— Radio, Community Awareness/PSA, National Release was awarded a Gabriel Award for Rosca de Reyes with Hector Bonilla. This was one of 80 public service announcements Voz Latina produced in 2002.

— Spanish-Language, Arts/Entertainment, National Radio Release was awarded a Gabriel Award for Rosalba, a drama about a maid who helps save the life of a young medical student after a horrible accident and how this impacts their lives.

— Spanish-Language, Arts/Entertainment, National Radio Release was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Una Noche de Oscuridad (One Night of Obscurity) a drama about a sister who rushes to death row to seek the forgiveness of her brother before he is executed.

Since 1998 Voz Latina has won six Gabriel Awards and two Certificates of Merit. Gabriel Awards recognize outstanding artistic achievement in television and radio programs that respect and uplift the human spirit. These awards are sought by broadcasters, including the major TV and radio networks, and producers throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Voz Latina recently learned that it will receive an Impact Award for “Excellence in Radio Programming.” It will be presented by the National Hispanic Media Coalition Sept. 10, at the Regent Beverly Hotel. Former recipients in various categories include James Cameron, Hector Elizondo and Lupe Ontiveros.

“We are very proud of the hard work of Melba Novoa, Family Theater’s Director of Radio and producer/director of Voz Latina, and her staff, Monica Castagnasso, associate producer, and Elli Bazini, music composer and sound engineer. These were collaborative projects that will be enjoyed by millions of listeners worldwide,” said Father Wilfred Raymond, CSC, National Director of Family Theater Productions. “We are grateful for this recognition.”

Family Theater created its Spanish-language radio project in 1996. “Voz Latina programs seek to capture the passion, struggle, texture and color of Hispanic-American living,” said Novoa, adding, “These spots and programs were created with the help of the top writers and actors in the world of Latino entertainment.”

Since 1947, Family Theater Productions, a Catholic media outlet, has been creating award-winning radio, television and cinema programs, which respect and celebrate individual dignity and the value of the family. These more than 800 programs feature hundreds of Hollywood stars and gave 1950s star actor James Dean and producer/director George Lucas (Star Wars) their first on-screen credits.
