On Monday, May 16th, more than 200 7th and 8th grade students at Roberto Clemente Middle School will kick-off Operation HOPE’s “Banking on Our Future” 2005 program series at their school. “Banking on Our Future” is a financial education program designed to teach children the basics of managing their financial futures and is the only national urban delivery platform for financial education in the U.S. today. Citigroup employees will volunteer as HOPE Corps banker-teachers to educate IS 195 students about the basics of earning income, budgeting, saving and investing.

At the event, Denise Durham-Williams, Citibank’s National Community Relations Director, will present a $500,000 grant check from the Citigroup Foundation to John Bryant, Operation HOPE Founder, Chairman and CEO, to support expansion of the program to reach 10,000 students in seven cities, including New York City (Harlem), the District of Columbia, Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Atlanta.

According to a 2002 study by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, 4,024 12th graders in all 50 states participated in a multiple choice survey on money management, savings, investment and credit. The compiled results confirmed an average failing score of 50.2%. And fewer than 30% of young Americans are given the opportunity to take even one week of personal finance course work in high school.

In April 2004, Citigroup (NYSE:C) and Operation HOPE announced a national partnership to support “Banking on Our Future,” in three cities. Since its inception, the program has served over 147,000 youth nationwide. Banking on Our Future has been awarded with the Oprah’s Angel Network award and most recently the U.S. Treasury Department’s John Sherman Award for financial literacy excellence.
