This highly-anticipated rematch of the 2002 World Cup Round 16 game, pits two of the top-ten national teams against each other, according to the latest FIFA® World Rankings.
Matches between these neighbors rival those of other world-class teams including Scotland versus England, Argentina versus Brazil and Korea versus Japan. The United States has been the dominating squad to date, winning five of the last six meetings including the most recent 2002 win in Korea.
“This is without a doubt one of the greatest soccer matches of the year. Soccer fans have eagerly waited for this rematch and Nike is proud to be a part of this historic game,” said Don Remlinger, Global Brand Director of Nike Soccer.
The Mexican National Team will make its U.S. debut wearing new Nike uniforms, recently unveiled in Mexico City. In January 2003, Nike was announced as the official footwear, apparel and equipment sponsor for the Mexican National Team.
The Team’s new home and visitor jerseys incorporate Nike’s innovative Cool Motion technology. Cool Motion helps players regulate temperature regardless of the weather conditions, resulting in improved physical performance for players during the game. For the passionate Mexico fan, Nike stretch woven replica jerseys will be available at U.S. Nike affiliated retail outlets starting July 1.
Nike and the Mexican Soccer Federation unveiled the Team’s uniforms on April 22 during a spectacular evening celebration at the Monumento a la Revolucion in the heart of Mexico City. The Mexican National Team now joins a roster of Nike-supported teams that includes Brazil, United States, Portugal, South Korea, and Holland, among others.
“Nike has always been about inspiring athletes and creating the world’s best performance footwear, apparel and equipment products, and this association underscores our commitment to the future of the sport and the players in Mexico,” said Remlinger.
