About Navidad en el Barrio

It started as one person’s hope of making Christmas a little brighter for needy families in the Hispanic Community of East Los Angeles. In 1972, Danny Villanueva, a former NFL start kicker and then general manager of a local television station, founded Navidad en el Barrio. Few envisioned how this charity, the oldest of its kind in the nation, would grow and prosper. Thirty-three years later, and with the help of an impressive network of charities, Navidad en el Barrio provides meals to over 30,000 needy households in

Southern California. Throughout our history, Navidad en el Barrio has provided food baskets with 12 or more food items to over 625,000 families. Our supporters this year include Coors Brewing Company, Cacique Cheese, Mahatma Rice, Santa Fe Salsa, Guerrero Corn Tortillas, Lawry’s Gravy Mix, Smuckers’ Jam, Sunkist Oranges, DiMare Oranges, Juanitas’, Minute Maid/Hi-C, Ragu Spaghetti Sauce, Knorr Soup, Lipton Ice Tea Mix, Springfield Mac & Cheese, Kerns Guayaba and Mango, Gerber, Good Cook, Randall Farms, Magnolia, Northgate, and Albertsons.
