DALLAS, March 18 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Parental leadership on educational involvement and school resources were the focus of the evening at the first seminar of the year for Parents Step Ahead. The event, organized by Parents Step Ahead and Irving Independent School District, was held on March 12, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Bowie Middle School in Irving, Texas.

Over 300 parents attended the program. Many of the parents brought their children. They were entertained by a clown who painted their faces with designs ranging from a butterfly to Spiderman, while their parents focused on the information provided during the seminar.

Among the 300 attendees were A.D. Jenkins, Irving ISD Board of Trustee Place 2; Gloria Garcia from Mountain View College; Guy Melton and Lynda Edwards from North Lake College; and Jose Villasenor, Juan Carlos Martinez and Maurice Walker from the Irving ISD administration headquarters.

Lupita Colmenero, Parents Step Ahead Chairwoman and Founder, welcomed the 300 enthusiastic parents who gathered in Bowie’s cafeteria to begin the seminar. Subsequent to the opening remarks, dinner provided by McDonald’s was served. Featured Speaker, Gloria Garcia of the Education Faculty & Teacher Prep Department of Mountain View College, spoke to the parents with reference to the use of love and logic while communicating with their children. She stressed the importance of establishing strong communication and study habits at home. “If we, as parents, create a connection between home and school and we add a strong positive communication with our kids, we are ensuring a successful future to our children,” Mrs. Garcia said. She also emphasized the importance of parental involvement in children’s education as not only a physical presence but the need for encouragement.

Following Ms. Garcia’s remarks, the Bowie Middle School’s Drama Club amused the crowd with a humorous version of Shakespeare’s love story, Romeo & Juliet. After the students concluded their play, Parents Step Ahead began its first raffle of 20 gifts bags, several calendars designed by Mexican children from around the world who won a drawing contest done by the Mexican government, and a gift basket with Bowie Middle School’s paraphernalia, donated by Irving ISD.

Concluding the raffle, a panel formed by Joe Moreno, Principal, Bowie Middle School; Maurice Walker, Irving ISD Adm. Building; Jose Villasenor, Irving ISD Adm. Building, Juan Carlos Martinez, Irving ISD Adm. Building; and Guy Melton and Lynda Edwards, North Lake College, provided information to the parents about college, financial aid, and the importance of encouraging their children to further their education after high school, and the economic difference it makes. Mr. Walker stressed the importance of higher education in today’s competitive job market and called upon parents to read to their children at an early age.

Parents Step Ahead’s first seminar concluded with the raffle of two gift baskets and a computer system. In her final remarks, Ms. Colmenero reminded the attendees about the Parents Step Ahead annual Parent of the Year contest, in which to be recognized as the Parent of the Year in a special dinner this upcoming December and to win a computer system, the parent needs to submit an essay focusing on the importance of parental involvement in the education of their children, and an essay by his/her children stating why their parent should be selected as the parent of the year. “Parents Step Ahead started 2009 with a very meaningful and successful event. We feel very motivated to continue educating parents from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to be more involved in their children’s academic life. Step by step, we are carrying on our mission, ‘To recognize, educate, enable, and empower parents to take a proactive role in the educational and personal development of their children’,” Ms. Colmenero concluded.

The winner of the computer was Lidia Ortega from Irving.

The event was sponsored by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., ETS, El Hispano News (http://www.elhispanonews.com), McDonald’s Corp., Univision, La Voz Del Pueblo and Recuerdo.
