TOLEDO, Ohio–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–July 28, 2003–Taco Bell Corp. today announced that Toledo, Ohio, native Tonia Wertz, 41, has won the grand prize in the Company’s “Chicken Enchi-lottery” Sweepstakes. A self-proclaimed risk-taker, Wertz chose to go for $15,000 in instant win lottery tickets over a safe bet of $5,000 cash or thousands of dollars in Taco Bell(R) food.

To celebrate, the winning Taco Bell restaurant location at 1317 North Reynolds Road will give away a free Chicken Enchilada Border Bowl(R) to all visitors on Tuesday, July 29, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. (local time). Family, friends, Taco Bell employees and customers will cheer Wertz on as she “scratches” 1,600 tickets for a chance to win even bigger on-site.

“A recent Taco Bell survey revealed 69 percent of Americans would play it safe with a similar choice, but our exceptional consumers think outside the bun — just like the brand,” said Taco Bell manager Keith Lamarre. “We’re welcoming everyone to our restaurant to meet Tonia and celebrate our hometown winner.”

Among Wertz’s scratch-off tickets are games such as Cash Explosion, Diamond Dollars, Double Bingo, Lucky Times Ten, 29th Anniversary Celebration and Super Summer Cash. While she has the chance to win big, Wertz as well as the community are already winners. Regardless of her potential lottery winnings, the state of Ohio and its school systems benefit.

Tonia Wertz has been a Toledo resident her entire life. She lives with her husband, two dogs, birds and ferrets. She frequently stops by the Reynolds Road Taco Bell(R) restaurant to enjoy her favorite menu item, Nachos Bell Grande. “I already feel lucky to have purchased just one Border Bowl(R) to win. But for even more luck, I’ll rub my husband’s bald head when I’m scratching for the big bucks,” said Wertz.

To play, consumers either purchased a Chicken Enchilada Border Bowl(R) at participating Taco Bell(R) locations or requested a free entry number via mail, and then submitted their receipt number online at the Taco Bell website. After the month-long promotion, which began in May, Taco Bell selected a winner at random. The winner chose between a safe bet of $5,000 cash, thousands of dollars in Taco Bell food or going for the grand prize — $15,000 in lottery tickets. Taco Bell coordinated with the Ohio State Lottery Commission to purchase $15,000 in scratch-off tickets as selected by Wertz.

Taco Bell Corp., a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM), is the nation’s leading Mexican-style quick service restaurant chain serving tacos, burritos, signature Quesadillas, Border Bowls(R), nachos and other specialty items.
