Sprint Honored with The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award in Washington, DC

Washington, DC–(HISPANIC PR WIRE)–September 23, 2004–The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), in conjunction with the Secretary of Defense, honored Sprint as a 2004 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award recipient on September 21, 2004 in Washington, DC.

Sprint employs approximately 61,000 employees nationwide, and actively recruits Guard and Reserve members, as well as prior military personnel, military spouses and other family members. About 12 percent of Sprint employees are military members. Since September 11, 2001, nearly 850 Sprint employees have been deployed, with as many as 187 employees out on active duty at one time. Sprint provides mobilized employees with pay differential, along with continued benefits for their families.

“Sprint’s success depends on staying true to our core values, such as integrity in all that we do and excellence in execution,” said Michael Fuller, President Sprint Local Telecommunications Division. “Military servicemen and their families share many of the same values and have gained valuable leadership and management skills during their service making Guardsmen, veterans and Reservists ideal candidates for careers at Sprint.”

Sprint has also participated in many military support activities, including donating prepaid phone cards to military families and providing video email communication to the troops from their families. In July 2004, Sprint donated $10,000.00 to Stars and Stripes to help facilitate the distribution of the publication to troops deployed overseas.

The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, a Waterford crystal eagle, was introduced in 1996 to publicly recognize the significant contributions and sacrifices made by America’s employers of Guardsmen and Reservists.

“Sprint’s exceptional support of their Reserve and National Guard employees during mobilization for the war against terrorism has set a standard for all employers to follow”, said David Janes, ESGR National Chairman. “Sprint’s advocacy of extending continuing benefits, making up pay differentials, and ensuring employees are returned to their jobs in a timely manner is truly a role model for corporate America. I am proud to have participated in the selection of Sprint for this prestigious award”, added Janes.
