SOMERS, N.Y.–(HISPANIC PR WIRE – BUSINESS WIRE)–July 10, 2003–The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (NYSE: PBG) today announced the winners of the “Draw Yourself a Future” competition, a scholarship program awarding Texas students a total of $33,000 in scholarships and grants for creating Texas-inspired artwork.
The grand prize winner is Antonio Jesus Orozco, an 18-year old graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Orozco will receive an educational scholarship of $10,000 at a July 11 ceremony in front of the state Capitol steps in Austin. Orozco’s scholarship will be presented by Mavis B. Knight, a member of the Texas State Board of Education representing Dallas. Orozco and his family will be flown to Austin for the presentation, which will be preceded by a tour of the Capitol and lunch with representatives from The Pepsi Bottling Group. In addition, PBG will award Orozco’s high school a $5,000 grant.
Nine second-place winners (listed below) will receive $1,000 educational scholarships, while each student’s school will receive a grant of $1,000. Judging was conducted by the Children’s Museum of Houston, which selected winners from over 500 submissions.
“We can think of no better artistic inspiration than the rich cultural landscape of Texas,” said Rick Almquist, Business Unit General Manager for The Pepsi Bottling Group. “We take pride in Texas and are pleased that ‘Draw Yourself a Future’ has inspired students to celebrate their own Texas pride while reaching for scholarships that will help build their future.”
Conducted in March and April of this year and open to all Texas students from grades six to 12 (ages 13-18), the competition called for entrants to create a drawing, painting or design on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper that best expresses what Texas means to them. “Draw Yourself a Future” is part of the Pepsi Si campaign, which features new packaging for all regular Pepsi-Cola sold in Texas and carries the tagline “YES to the same great taste!”
In addition to the scholarship program, PBG will be sponsoring a number of events across Texas this year as part of the Pepsi Si initiative, including Diez y Siez de Septiembre celebrations in San Antonio, Houston and the Rio Grande Valley. Pepsi is also supporting the San Antonio Food Bank, the Latino Chamber of Commerce in Dallas/Fort Worth and the Fiesta del Noche river theater series in San Antonio.
